It occured to me that we should probably check which resources the pnpbios is
reporting. If you have a chance, could you please show me the output of this
hack.

I just wanted to confirm that this patch has solved my problem (my

Adding printk's is a pretty quick-n-easy way of finding out where it is
getting stuck. Just add

#define AAA() printk("%s:%d\n", __FILE__, __LINE__)

to kernel.h and sprinkle AAA()'s everywhere. It takes a few iterations to
drill right down to the bug.

sorry I should of made it cleaner. If you read up on Advanced Routing HOWTO,
its hopefully easy to understand.

lets say:
------------
alex@inskipp:~$ cat /etc/iproute2/rt_tables
#
# reserved values
#
255 local
254 main
253 default
0 unspec
#
# local
#
1 inr.ruhep

# inskipp
32 ppp-upstream
33	ppp-downstream
------------

you then type (something along the lines of):

---------
ip route add default dev ppp1 table ppp-upstream
ip route add default dev ppp0 table ppp-downstream
ip rule add from 10.0.0.0/8 iif eth1 table ppp-upstream
ip rule add to 10.0.0.0/8 iif eth0 table ppp-downstream
ip route flush cache
---------

In summary, this setups linux to do exactly what is in the diagram (below).
The nice thing is after the above is setup you treat it as if its a physical
interface, its a real ppp session. Any traffic that goes into ppp0 appears
on ppp1 and vice versa; treat it like a fancy wormhole :)

The advantage here over the IMQ-ng that is being made, from what I uderstand,
is here the only patch you need is to bypass connection tracking on the
Internet bound traffic from eth1 (for techie reasons), when it 'appears' from
ppp1 then the connection tracking should be allowed to continue. This is
where the RAW netfilter patch comes into play.

Although you are swapping one kernel patch for another, the RAW one looks
like its going to be around much longer and actually maintained, the other
very important fact is that you can now (if you think about it, I will leave
it as an exercise for you) use it to simulate those IP-Aliasing interfaces
and actually now shape on that basis per pipe. The clue is true _source_
based routing ;)

in theory I guess you could setup a linu bridge over the ppp-pipe, however
there is no point (from what I can see) as you are NATing, so the box is the
default gateway for the other machines, plus more importantly, if you want a
bridge why not just forget about the ppp-pipe and bridge over eth0<->eth1.
This is what my jdg-qos-script[1] from more or less day one.

Anyway, feedback would be great on the above idea.

Alex

Going off on a tangent...

There are all sorts of potentially-interesting things that could be
done if Linux had a userspace filesystem mechanism included in the
standard kernel -- as well as encryption, there's also network
filesystems, various sorts of specialised caching (such as Zero
Install), automounter-like systems, prototyping and so on.

Is there a technical reason that none of the userspace filesystem
layers have been included in the stock kernel, or is it just that
nobody's submitted any of them for inclusion yet?

I cannot know for certain what is installed on your system. The usual
command for checking eth* interfaces (not "devices") is

         ifconfig -a

Some newer, or stripped down, Linux systems may lac
$> this command. In that
case, see if you have the command "ip" on your system. If you do, the command

         ip link show

should give you information about the interfaces.

I am assunming here that your Linux kernel has in it, or loads modul
$>s that
provide, support for the actual NICs in your system. If not, you don't have

the eth* interfaces, and you'll need to do something to create them. I
cannot say what without knowing a few more things, namely ...

         what sorts of NICs
$>they are (you may have to open the case to find
out, or the command "lspci" may tell you)
what Linux distrubution and version you are using
what Linux kernel ("uname -a") you are running, and whether it
is
a stock or a custom-co
$>piled kernel.

You should be logged on as root to execute any of the commands I listed
above.

As to whether you should "unplug" one ... it depends on unreported details

of your setup. Again, approaches vary a lot from one Linux distro to
anoth
$>r, but newer versions are tending to use /etc/network/interfaces as
the config file for the eth* (and some other) network interfaces. You might

see if you have such a file and, if you do, what it says about setup of

eth0 and eth1. Which of them (
$>r are both) is set up here to get an IP
address via DHCP?

And am I correct in inferring that both eth* interfaces are connected to

the *same* network (the same LAN, probably)? If they are, you probably want

to ask the sysadmin if the network is
$>setup to allow the interfaces to be
bridged, so they can work together to double your connection speed. If they

are not, advising you as to what you should do depends enough on what they

are connected to that no advice can make sense without your
$>providing more
information.

**** Help for Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org:

This help message is being sent to you from the Majordomo mailing list
management system at Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQonhvxM+mQhndA@public.gmane.org

This is version 1.94.4 of Majordomo.

If you're familiar with mail servers, an advanced user's summary of
Majordomo's commands appears at the end of this message.

Majordomo is an automated system which allows users to subscribe
and unsubscribe to mailing lists, and to retrieve files from list
archives.

You can interact with the Majordomo software by sending it commands
in the body of mail messages addressed to "Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org".
Please do not put your commands on the subject line; Majordomo does
not process commands in the subject line.

You may put multiple Majordomo commands in the same mail message.
Put each command on a line by itself.

If you use a "signature block" at the end of your mail, Majordomo may
mistakenly believe each line of your message is a command; you will
then receive spurious error messages. To keep this from happening,
either put a line starting with a hyphen ("-") before your signature,
or put a line with just the word

	end

on it in the same place. This will stop the Majordomo software from
processing your signature as bad commands.

Here are some of the things you can do using Majordomo:

I.	FINDING OUT WHICH LISTS ARE ON THIS SYSTEM

To get a list of publicly-available mailing lists on this system, put the
following line in the body of your mail message to Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org:

	lists

Each line will contain the name of a mailing list and a brief description
of the list.

To get more information about a particular list, use the "info" command,
supplying the name of the list. For example, if the name of the list
about which you wish information is "demo-list", you would put the line

	info demo-list

in the body of the mail message.

II.	SUBSCRIBING TO A LIST

Once you've determined that you wish to subscribe to one or more lists on
this system, you can send commands to Majordomo to have it add you to the
list, so you can begin receiving mailings.

To receive list mail at the address from which you're sending your mail,
simply say "subscribe" followed by the list's name:

	subscribe demo-list

If for some reason you wish to have the mailings go to a different address
(a friend's address, a specific other system on which you have an account,
or an address which is more correct than the one that automatically appears
in the "From:" header on the mail you send), you would add that address to
the command. For instance, if you're sending a request from your work
account, but wish to receive "demo-list" mail at your personal account
(for which we will use "jqpublic-SQwh1N1JpynQT0dZR+AlfA@public.gmane.org" as an example), you'd put
the line

	subscribe demo-list jqpublic-SQwh1N1JpynQT0dZR+AlfA@public.gmane.org

in the mail message body.

Based on configuration decisions made by the list owners, you may be added
to the mailing list automatically. You may also receive notification
that an authorization key is required for subscription. Another message
will be sent to the address to be subscribed (which may or may not be the
same as yours) containing the key, and directing the user to send a
command found in that message back to Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQonhvxM+mQhndA@public.gmane.org (This can be
a bit of extra hassle, but it helps keep you from being swamped in extra
email by someone who forged requests from your address.) You may also
get a message that your subscription is being forwarded to the list owner
for approval; some lists have waiting lists, or policies about who may
subscribe. If your request is forwarded for approval, the list owner
should contact you soon after your request.

Upon subscribing, you should receive an introductory message, containing
list policies and features. Save this message for future reference; it
will also contain exact directions for unsubscribing. If you lose the
intro mail and would like another copy of the policies, send this message
to Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org:

	intro demo-list

(substituting, of course, the real name of your list for "demo-list").

III.	UNSUBSCRIBING FROM MAILING LISTS

Your original intro message contains the exact command which should be
used to remove your address from the list. However, in most cases, you
may simply send the command "unsubscribe" followed by the list name:

	unsubscribe demo-list

(This command may fail if your provider has changed the way your
address is shown in your mail.)

To remove an address other than the one from which you're sending
the request, give that address in the command:

	unsubscribe demo-list jqpublic-SQwh1N1JpynQT0dZR+AlfA@public.gmane.org

In either of these cases, you can tell Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org to remove
the address in question from all lists on this server by using "*"
in place of the list name:

	unsubscribe *
	unsubscribe * jqpublic-SQwh1N1JpynQT0dZR+AlfA@public.gmane.org

IV.	FINDING THE LISTS TO WHICH AN ADDRESS IS SUBSCRIBED

To find the lists to which your address is subscribed, send this command
in the body of a mail message to Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org:

	which

You can look for other addresses, or parts of an address, by specifying
the text for which Majordomo should search. For instance, to find which
users at my-isp.com are subscribed to which lists, you might send the
command

	which my-isp.com

Note that many list owners completely or fully disable the "which"
command, considering it a privacy violation.

V.	FINDING OUT WHO'S SUBSCRIBED TO A LIST

To get a list of the addresses on a particular list, you may use the
"who" command, followed by the name of the list:

	who demo-list

Note that many list owners allow only a list's subscribers to use the
"who" command, or disable it completely, believing it to be a privacy
violation.

VI.	RETRIEVING FILES FROM A LIST'S ARCHIVES

Many list owners keep archives of files associated with a list. These
may include:
- back issues of the list
- help files, user profiles, and other documents associated with the list
- daily, monthly, or yearly archives for the list

To find out if a list has any files associated with it, use the "index"
command:

	index demo-list

If you see files in which you're interested, you may retrieve them by
using the "get" command and specifying the list name and archive filename.
For instance, to retrieve the files called "profile.form" (presumably a
form to fill out with your profile) and "demo-list.9611" (presumably the
messages posted to the list in November 1996), you would put the lines

	get demo-list profile.form
	get demo-list demo-list.9611

in your mail to Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQonhvxM+mQhndA@public.gmane.org

VII.	GETTING MORE HELP

To contact a human site manager, send mail to Majordomo-Owner-jdkK1e9JQonhvxM+mQhndA@public.gmane.org
To contact the owner of a specific list, send mail to that list's
approval address, which is formed by adding "-approval" to the user-name
portion of the list's address. For instance, to contact the list owner
for demo-list-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org, you would send mail to demo-list-approval@mutt.org.

To get another copy of this help message, send mail to Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org
with a line saying

	help

in the message body.

VIII.	COMMAND SUMMARY FOR ADVANCED USERS

In the description below items contained in []'s are optional. When
providing the item, do not include the []'s around it. Items in angle
brackets, such as <address>, are meta-symbols that should be replaced
by appropriate text without the angle brackets.

It understands the following commands:

    subscribe <list> [<address>]
Subscribe yourself (or <address> if specified) to the named <list>.

    unsubscribe <list> [<address>]
Unsubscribe yourself (or <address> if specified) from the named <list>.
"unsubscribe *" will remove you (or <address>) from all lists. This
_may not_ work if you have subscribed using multiple addresses.

    get <list> <filename>
Get a file related to <list>.

    index <list>
Return an index of files you can "get" for <list>.

    which [<address>]
Find out which lists you (or <address> if specified) are on.

    who <list>
Find out who is on the named <list>.

    info <list>
Retrieve the general introductory information for the named <list>.

    intro <list>
Retrieve the introductory message sent to new users. Non-subscribers
may not be able to retrieve this.

    lists
Show the lists served by this Majordomo server.

    help
	Retrieve this message.

    end
Stop processing commands (useful if your mailer adds a signature).

Commands should be sent in the body of an email message to
"Majordomo-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org". Multiple commands can be processed provided
each occurs on a separate line.

Commands in the "Subject:" line are NOT processed.

If you have any questions or problems, please contact
"Majordomo-Owner-jdkK1e9JQok@public.gmane.org".

this function is part of the write error recovery function that is
meant for the unrealiable pipelined mode. after recovering from the
internal buffer in an event of a write error, it will re-position the
tape.

Actually, I just spotted another thing that we need to fix. When we
are in the pipelined write mode, we can't inform the user about the
error codes (that is why it is a return void, not return error code),
until the next task. And the next possible place to inform the user,
is in the function "idetape_position_tape". If our read back buffer
fails because we are unable to allocate memory for a stage, then we
might not be able to position the tape (guess).

Sheese, idetape_discard_read_pipeline() should be tested to check
whether positioning can be done but it isn't for most of the calls
in ide-tape.c.

> I guess that it could panic(), although I hate adding panics.

I don't think it will panic, but it will be better if someone
can test this.

That would make sense... as for 6000 not sure.

Forwarning this firewall is based on Robert L. Ziegler's book "Linux
Firewalls". The book is by and large good, but ... heck I haven't done this
before :).

Reason it is called stage2 is that i am planning to run a deny be default
script at startup ... thought that seems useless now that i've been thinking
about it, since i can just raise the firewall via if-up.

That should not matter any more.

For what it is worth, the problem appears to be fixed, and in the
wierdest way.

I booted kernel 2.4 without ide-scsi, and it failed to work. Then I
booted 2.4 with ide-scsi, and things were working again.

The burner could not read the last three CDs I burned, one CD/RW, and
the other CD/R's on kernel 2.6.1 and the other on a Windows machine.

Just for the hell of it, I blanked and burned the CD/RW.

Instantly, I could read all of the "problem" CDs.

I booted 2.4 without ide-scsi, and it worked.

I booted 2.6.1 without ide-scsi, and it worked.

It's as if doing that blank and burn operation "fixed" something about
the drive.

I'm hoping to try a few reboots to make sure this drive is working
before fully deciding things are OK, but it certainly looks that way.

menu is not available for woody because it's written in a language which
bears a passing resemblance to C++. someone rewrote it in C++ for
sarge.

I agree.

The only other uses for __ldcw are the SPIN_LOCK macro in atomic.h
and the _raw_spin_trylock in spinlock.h (i.e., it is only used
acquire locks). If all these need barriers, then it might as well
be in __ldcw.

I told Grant, that at my current schedule, it would be 2006
before I fixed this problem :)

It looks like a reordering issue, perhaps taking a look at the
respective .o objects produced by the two compilers might reveal the
issue. I think that's the way we did it when the tty layer broke and we
had to have that console.o compiled with 3.0.4 by hand? I think Randolph
and Grant worked on that together. I might have the wrong names, but
we've successfully debugged a problem like this before using similar
methods.

My schedule isn't much better. I'm off to Tokyo at the end of the week
to waive the Canadian flag at the ISO LRG meetin next week. After that,
my brother's company would like me to work on more firmware for a new
project.

Is this on a SMP kernel (i.e., could this be a locking issue)?

Either use serial console or replace the FX4 with PCI FX-E.

Hi Grant, Christoph,

I find a fix for this pb. I tested successfully (I reach to login with a
ttyB0 after replacing ttyS0 in inittab and telinit q :) ) on a 32bit 2.4
kernel on my b2k and a 64bit (up) [also 2.4] kernel on my N4k.

Forewarning ... i ain't "qualified" ... heck i couldn't get my gfx card to
work on 2.6 until yesterday (and i still don't know why that was).

ANYWAY

i got the same symptoms, and the reason it was doing it on my system was that
in the config i was using in several places it referenced the wrong chipset.
via instead of nforce2 type thing.

>From memory it did this all over the place with regards to sound, hdd and
memory.
Check
Device Drivers - ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL
Character Devices - AGP Support
		  - i2c Support
Sound

etc ...

I'm sorry if this is completely useless. But it was what was at fault here.
PS there could be others that i can't remember ... just check for the right
chipset.

This doesn't make sense. PAGE0->mem_cons.cl_class has to be CL_DUPLEX
otherwise the test above would have failed. Do you perhaps mean that &&
above to be an || ? If so, this would all read better as ...

	/* wait for a keyboard (rs232)-input */
	spin_lock_irqsave(&pdc_lock, flags);
	if (PAGE0->mem_cons.cl_class == CL_DUPLEX) {

		real32_call(PAGE0->mem_cons.iodc_io,
			    (unsigned long)PAGE0->mem_cons.hpa,
ENTRY_IO_CIN,
			    PAGE0->mem_cons.spa,
__pa(PAGE0->mem_cons.dp.layers),
			    __pa(iodc_retbuf), 0, __pa(iodc_dbuf), 1,
0);
	} else if (PAGE0->mem_kbd.iodc_io) {
		real32_call(PAGE0->mem_kbd.iodc_io,
			    (unsigned long)PAGE0->mem_kbd.hpa,
ENTRY_IO_CIN,
			    PAGE0->mem_kbd.spa,
__pa(PAGE0->mem_kbd.dp.layers),
			    __pa(iodc_retbuf), 0, __pa(iodc_dbuf), 1,
0);
	} else {
		spin_unlock_irqrestore(&pdc_lock, flags);
		return 0;
	}

Slightly ugly to have two unlocks for the same lock, but that's better
than duplicating the test. I haven't looked at the code, maybe we could
use a goto instead.

Right Matthew this case is nearly impossible (may be excepted if
disconected
the usb kbd during the boot), it would means that my pdc_console is not
a
serial one (ie graphic([01])) but no usb kdb found, so in that case pdc
would
switch console automaticaly to serial.

I would just still check the case when I have an usb kbd (I would have
to
recover one) but the pdc console is setup to serial port (eg no graphic
screen
available) just for an output screen without input kbd?

Thanks for your attention and remarks,
    Joel

That case is also impossible, the console setup as serial_1 (eg) is
always
CL_DUPLEX :(

I will so review my patch.

Thanks for all,

* Re: Writing CIS... ioctl?
From: Andries.Brouwer @ 2004-01-27 1:35 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: patearl, usb-storage; +Cc: linux-kernel

Hi. As a fun little project I'm considering adding userland support
for reading and writing the CIS block via the SDDR-09. Based on my
previous driver experience, I'd do it using an ioctl on the scsi
device it maps to. However, I'm unsure of how the SCSI/USB layering
occurs and if an ioctl would be the best way to allow access to the
CIS. Note that the CIS info itself is roughly 100 bytes, and that
information is duplicated in another location on the smartmedia card.

Any thoughts? Is an ioctl the way to do it?

Are there other ways that low level control data is written to storage
    devices?

For any single project ioctl() is one of the easy ways of doing it.
There are other communication channels, like module parameters
or proc files.

But there are lots of such projects, and after doing a few hundred of them
we have interface mess. For the dev_t change last year I did an audit of
all ioctls, more than a thousand, with lots of different interfaces,
sometimes varying between architectures, not exactly a pleasure.

So, something else is needed, and we do not have it. Lots of ideas have been
suggested. Whatever one does the situation is messy, just because the type
of control needed varies a lot.

If for every device there also is a control device, then the control device
can be opened and ordinary read and write calls can be used. That is good.
But still there will be parsing on both sides, so the mess has only been
hidden a little, it is still there.

Sysfs tries to avoid the parsing problem by having a large number of files,
each with a simple ASCII value. Now one has to walk and parse messy trees.
People who like that will want a control filesystem instead of a control device
for each device.

But you do not want a long discussion, but a utility.

Give the driver a reading and a writing mode.
(Read normal 512-byte blocks, or 512+64-bytes blocks plus control,
or just the 64-byte control, possibly with a choice between 16-byte and
64-byte control, and similarly for write, where write also has the
writeCIS possibility.)

The getting and setting of reading and writing mode is separate from the
rest. While testing, it is probably easiest to use a module parameter.
If everything works, and you want to submit the result for inclusion in the
kernel, see whether Linus has requirements on the shape things should be in.

In case you learn things about the sddr09 hardware not yet documented,
I would like to hear about them.

Andries

[Non-sddr09 examples of control things one wants to do: setmax on a disk;
set a password on a disk; set a disk read-only or read-write (on the
media level or on the drive level or on the software level); eject;
reread partition table; set a ZIP drive to disk vs large floppy mode;
load a keymap; set unicode mode; load a compose table; assign keycodes
to scancode sequences; set keyboard repeat rate; set magic SysRq key.]

i strongly doubt that you will get this wokring with such an incredibly
old kernel... You'd basically need to backport more than two years of
netfilter/iptables development on top of 2.4.7...

The patch-o-matic README doesn indicate that it only supports 2.4.18 and
later.
