great! alsamixer does not segfault anymore with exec-shield.

but I have some problems with v1.0.2: sample rate 44100 does not work,
it was fine with v1.0.1.

Hmm.. libsysfs should pick up the sysfs mount point irrespective of whether it
is mounted on /sys or otherwise. Can you please check by enabling logging in
libsysfs by setting DEBUG to 1 in sysfs.h and see where it is erroring out?

Thanks,
Ananth

* [ANNOUNCE] FUSE 1.1-pre2
From: Miklos Szeredi @ 2004-01-27 11:02 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: avf-fuse-dev, linux-kernel

This is the next (and hopefully the last) prerelease version to 1.1.

The biggest change is that NFS export of a FUSE filesystem is now
supported under linux 2.6.X. Since 2.4 has an inferior NFS export
interface it would be much more difficult to support it. But who
wants to use 2.4 anyway :)

The other change is that small (4k) reads are now the default again.
This is because there is some overhead with 64k reads (a memory
allocation and an extra memory copy). Of course if your filesystem
handles big reads more efficiently, then 64k reads may come out
better. This can be controlled with the '-l' option of fusermount,
passed to the fuse_mount() function or if using fuse_main() this also
works:

  fuseprog /mnt/xyz -- -l

You can download it from here:

  http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=21636&package_id=31956&release_id=212701

Please test this release, as this will be 1.1 if no problems are
found!

Thanks,
Miklos

Sorry. My graphics cards is ATI Radeon 9200. And I have a AX45H-8X Max Aopen's
motherboard (with SiS graphics controler [I don't remember the exact model.
You can find it in aopen page]).

I provide you my .config files (of 2.4.24 and 2.6.1) for if you detect any
problem.

For the other hand, why you put 0x317 instead of 791?. Is it the same? I
suspect this from your message. Why?

How can I know what number I could pass to vga=xxx in my kernel (where xxx is
a number)?. Perphaps it's a newbee question. Sorry.

Thank you,
Xan.

I actually have 0206 on my notebook.

The APIC/ACPI problem seems solved and the fix will hopefully make it
into the 2.6.x series (if it hasn't gone in already).

Unfortunately, it appears that ACPI still has some troubles with my
notebook. None of the S1, S3 modes really comes back and S4 (swsusp)
also doesn't do what it's supposed to do.

Will try again this week with the current development versions,
although it seems that some problems may be more generally to the
Intel 855GM chipset: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1877

Since I can't find the time to do some code-investigation, all I have
to offer for solving the problem at the moment is information and
occasional testing.

If someone felt like digging into the issue, I would be eternally
grateful, though. ;-)

Regards,
Georg

Great, I gave this a spin and noticed two trivial issues. Firstly it
wont compile with firmware load support not configured. Also
ipr_free_dump isnt wrapped in CONFIG_SCSI_IPR_DUMP.

* show_task() is not SMP safe
From: Arnd Bergmann @ 2004-01-27 12:06 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-kernel; +Cc: Christian Borntraeger

Christian Bornträger noticed that the kernel can crash after
<SysRq>-T. It appears that the show_task function gets called
for all tasks, which does not work if one of the tasks is
running in a system call on another CPU. In that case the
result of thread_saved_pc and show_stack is undefined and
likely to cause a crash.

For tasks running in user space on other CPUs, show_task()
is probably harmless, but I'm not sure if that's true on all
architectures.

The patch below is still racy for tasks that are about to
sleep, but it demonstrates the problem.

In the same function, there is another (harmless) bug that causes
the "free stack" indicator to be wrong. It can take any value
between zero and the intended meaning unless __alloc_thread_info
is modified to clear newly allocated stack memory.

As was mentioned before: the netfilter framework itself is able to drop
packets without negative side effects. So this should also be possible
for IMQ (or any other network device driver).

Today I experienced this problem with a Cisco Aironet 350.
I just want to point out it's the first time it happens.
In fact, I still used this NIC on this kernel (2.6.1) without
any kind of problem. Attached is an extract from my log.

I'm also no pro in this area, but I think this would be a bad idea. I
guess this would have impact on the interface's statistics about sent,
received and dropped packets, making it hard to look for network
configuration errors and similar things.

Thanks for your reply, Jamal. Unfortunately, we don't really understand
your example. Please see below.

[snip]

We aren't. :) We won't need bridging on those firewalls, it's only
necessary for the main shaper box. I apologize for not making that
clear in my previous post.

What's the mechanism for matching the IPs? We need to insert
thousands of these rules and shape constant 20+ Mbit flow of
traffic. If it doesn't use a hash or similar, we're back to
where we started.

Would you know of any real documentation on tc/ingress that
we could use to deconstruct this example and understand it?

At this moment we can only guess at what's happening. :(

I partly, but at the same time it becomes somewhat complex when making
firewalling policies when not.

For me it is easier to grasp what is happending with the packet if it is
viewed like the original packet is forwarded to the ipsec engine and the
ipsec engine then generates a new packet.

This is very different from NAT as ESP/AH is a complete protocol
transformation where the resulting packet does not resemble the original
packet in any manner. This is also very much visible to conntrack where
the original packets needs to be tracked as one connection while the ipsec
gateway<->gateway traffic needs to be a separate connection. IPSec is
essentially a tunneling protocol, tunneling IP packets over an encrypted
connection. The tunnel endpoints are the IPSec gateways.

Even in the Host<->Host IPSec case the tunnel view is most appropriate. As
soon as the packets enter the IPSec encapsulation they loose all the
relevant propoerties of the original connection and becomes part of the
single IPSec Host <-> IPSec Host connection all packets between these two
IPSec host is transmitted over.

What may be interesting in netfilter is to preserve some kind of
inheritance, allowing "OUTPUT" rules to know important details about the
original packet when seeing an ESP packet.

My view of where hooks should be for IPSec:

(Client) -> Gateway -> (Gateway)

  1. PREROUTING, original client packet
  2. FORWARD, original client packet. Destination the IPSec SPI
  3. POSTROUTING, original client packet. Destination the IPSec SPI
  4. OUTPUT, ESP packet. Preferably with some preserved information about
the original packet attached.
  5. POSTROUTING, ESP packet.

If the packet is rerouted in POSTROUTING then this should include IPSec
routing. If the new route is to an IPSec SPI then it is. If not then it is
not.

(Gateway) -> Gateway -> (client)

  1. PREROUTING, ESP packet
  2. FORWARD, ESP packet. Destination the IPSec SPI
  3. POSTROUTING, ESP packet. Destination the IPSec SPI.
  4. PREROUTING, decapsulated packet. With reference to the IPSec SPI.
  5. FORWARD, decapsulated packet. With reference to the IPSec SPI.
  6. POSTROUTING, decapsulated packet. With reference to the IPSec SPI.

Host -> (Gateway)

  1. OUTPUT, original packet
  2. POSTROUTING, original packet. Destination the IPSec SPI
  3. OUTPUT, ESP packet. Preferably with some preserved information about
the original packet attached.
  4. POSTROUTING, ESP packet. Preferably with some preserved information
about the original packet attached.

(Gateway) -> Host

  1. PREROUTING, ESP packet.
  2. INPUT, ESP packet.
  3. PREROUTING, Decapsulated packet, with reference to the IPSec SPI
  4. INPUT, Decapsulated packet, with reference to the IPSec SPI

Non-IPSec traffic:

As is today. There must be no change.

These hooks fits naturally into the concepts of the netfilter hook
principles if IPSec is viewed as a tunneling method, which it in my
opinion is best viewed as. It also fits the requirements for conntrack to
be able to track the different types of connections involved, including
NAT operations on both original and ESP traffic (assuming local NAT
enabled if DNAT is required on ESP).

A NAT:ed connection is still the same connection at the packet level. ESP
moves the packet into a new connection carrying all kinds of packets
between the two IPSec endpoints where this host is one of the endpoints.

Granted.

Ah, we agree! ;-)

The above hook orders should match your expectations I think. Maybe we
don't agree on the use of INPUT/OUTPUT in the case of forwarded client
traffic, but I see no other clean way. These packets are deliberately
addressed to/from this host, not the client, and part of the IPSec
connection they are forwarded over between the two IPSec endpoints,
not the original connection.

I save myself from diging into exacly where the hooks need to be in the
kernel as I have not looked in detail at the 2.6 IPSec implementation, but
I take for granted that several need to be at the corresponding locations
in the IPSec protocol kernel. I also see it likely there needs to be some
skb extensions to add the requires SPI tracking information to
allow rulesets a better view of what is going on (optional).

Without knowing in detail how the 2.6 IPSec policies are maintained I see
a slight risk that the 2.6 IPSec policy implementation maybe can not
easily match the routing expectations, but it should be possible to find a
way to at least give reasonable hook order I think. But there is a risk it
is not possible to reroute packets to/from an IPSec route and the DNAT
capabilities may be somewhat limited in such case until the IPSec kernel
is extended with what may be required to do this cleanly. (i.e. slightly
more than just inserting the appropriate hooks may be required)

* Problem deleting files with NAND/JFFS2 and a possible solution
From: Howard Gray @ 2004-01-27 11:47 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-mtd

Hi,

I am using kernel 2.4.20 with the latest cvs MTD version. The system is a
PowerPC-based embedded device with both NOR and NAND flash. I have a
partition in NAND flash using JFFS2 as the file system.

If I mount a JFFS2 partition, delete a single file and unmount again,
everthing is o.k.

But if I mount the JFFS2 partition, delete a file and then (after a long pause
to ensure the garbage collector has finished) turn off the device without
unmounting, the file reappears after the reboot and new mount command. There
are various variations on this like mounting read-only before unmounting etc.
(with this device, I cannot assume that a user turns off this device in a
controlled way....)

It appears as if just deleting a file is not enough to mark any inodes as
dirty so that kupdated ignores them. It doesn't matter how long you wait for
the GC to be started because it won't be unless you do something else to the
file system too, like creating a new file or sending a SIGHUP to the GC. For
the same reason a "sync" doesn't help either.

After some time I came to the conclusion that there is a problem in the
function "jffs2_full_dirent" in the file "fs/jffs2/write.c". A call is made
to "jffs2_flash_writev" which has as its final parameter an inode number
(assuming alloc_mode is not ALLOC_GC). It looks like this:

write.c: approx. line 282.....

    ret = jffs2_flash_writev(c, vecs, 2, flash_ofs, &retlen,
                 (alloc_mode==ALLOC_GC)?0:fd->ino);

"fd->ino" would appear always to be "0" in the case where a file is just being
deleted which, in turn, at the end of "jffs2_flash_writev" stops the inode
being dirtied (i.e. the superblock's "s_dirt" flag is not set to "1"): Here's
the call at the wnd of "jffs2_flash_writev":

wbuf.c: approx. line 752.....

    if (c->wbuf_len && ino)
        jffs2_wbuf_dirties_inode(c, ino);

I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable about the internals of JFFS2 to supply a
proper patch, but it would seem to me that the call to "jffs2_flash_writev"
in write.c at line 282 should be like this:

Suggestion....
write.c: approx. line 282.....

    ret = jffs2_flash_writev(c, vecs, 2, flash_ofs, &retlen,
                 (alloc_mode==ALLOC_GC)?0:je32_to_cpu(rd->pino));

This would appear to be the inode of the directory entry and this is really
what we are changing when we delete a file, or am I missing something here ?
In any case, this change seems to have the desired effect and the problem is
cured.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Okay, that makes sense.

What is the time the garbage collection starts or finished this?
I waited some time (about 10 minutes) and the messages still occured after
remount.

That's understandable - inserting a second interface is quite
intrusive. However, creating a logical interface does not require
inserting a second NIC - merely binding a second IP address to the
existing NIC - two networks running on the same NIC - John

You are trying to use C99 syntax in a file which isn't being treated
as such.

The default C dialect is C89 plus GNU extensions (-std=gnu89). The
Info file for gcc 3.0 says that C99 plus GNU extensions (-std=gnu99)
will become the default once the C99 support is complete. Until then,
if you want to use C99, you have to explicitly ask for it with
-std=c99 or -std=gnu99.

See the "C Dialect Options" node in the gcc Info file for more
details.

You may have been using a modified version of gcc, although I suppose
that it's possible that -std=gnu99 may have been the default for some
versions.

Agreed. As the debian maintainer of udev I consider *very* important for
users being allowed to specify additional rules which will be merged
with the ones of the default configuration. A trivial example is being
able to add rules with only a SYMLINK statement which will match a
specific device and create an additional symlinks (i.e. not override the
ones already defined in the main configuration file).

I'm not so sure. I did an ugly test by doing
 #cp file1 file2
and during this command I pushed the reset button.

After bootup and the expected error messages the file2 was
there in an expected size (about half of file1).

Now I tried to remove the "broken" file2, which worked, but
after umount/mount, the file2 was here again. So I was not
able to remove this file.

I'm also no pro in this area, but I think this would be a bad idea. I
guess this would have impact on the interface's statistics about sent,
received and dropped packets, making it hard to look for network

They'll persist until the garbage collection erases the block in

sooner.

It's harmless. I prefer to err on the side of verbosity than to miss
