Atm every driver using drm_panel needs a bit of glue to bind it into it's
display chain. With this code, and bridge chaining, you'd get that for
free, and I think that would be rather useful. And from a software point
of view I'd say if it quacks like a bridge, and walks like a bridge, it
probably _is_ a bridge. Even if no one calls that, or if physical the only
thing on the board at that spot are a bunch of dumb wires.

Ah, you are talking about problem that after 4d5538f5882a lis3lv02d will
not work... I thought that discussion is about different mechanism how
to implement bus registration notification to smo8800 driver (or
different solution to not have registration in i801).

Yes. It runs since 2017-01-01 and without problems until today.
I think it looks good but that is just my feeling. I don't know if it is
to early to say that.
I also did some heavy git repository actions to big repositories. The
system is in swap and still no OOMs.

The issue is constrained to hybrid graphics laptops with Nvidia discrete
GPU using nouveau. Hence it needs to be fixed in nouveau, not in the
PCI core.
(AFAIUI, laptops with AMD discrete GPU are not affected as it is known
when and how to call an ACPI method versus using PR3.)
(Neither are laptops using the Nvidia proprietary driver as it doesn't
runtime suspend the card. But battery life will be terrible then.)
We're at rc2 so the time frame for coming up with a fix is probably
4 weeks. Peter and others have tried for months to reverse-engineer
how to handle runtime PM on newer Nvidia cards. It seems likely that
we'll not find the ultimate solution to the problem within 4 weeks.
The way it is now, i.e. defaulting to PR3 when available, regresses
certain laptops such as Kilian's. If on the other hand we default to
DSM when available, we'll regress certain other laptops, as Peter has
pointed out. Whitelisting or blacklisting laptops doesn't seem a good
approach either, ideally we'd want to use PR3 as Windows does.
As said, the only short-term solution I see is to add an "optimus"
module_param to nouveau to allow users to select which method to use.
So in Kilian's case an additional command line parameter would be
necessary to fix the issue.
Does anyone see a better solution or can we agree on this one? If so
I can come up with a patch. This could go in via Dave Airlie's tree.

Before applying the patch, used the of_get_videomode function to
parse the display-timings in the panel which is the child driver
of dsi in the devicetree. this is wrong. So removed the
of_get_videomode and fixed to get videomode struct through
mode_set callback function.

Yes. It runs since 2017-01-01 and without problems until today.
I think it looks good but that is just my feeling. I don't know if it is
to early to say that.
I also did some heavy git repository actions to big repositories. The
system is in swap and still no OOMs.

Before applying the patch, used the of_get_videomode function to
parse the display-timings in the panel which is the child driver
of dsi in the devicetree. this is wrong. So removed the
of_get_videomode and fixed to get videomode struct through

Purpose of this patch is add support for S6E3HA2 AMOLED panel on
the TM2 board. The first patch adds support for S6E3HA2 panel
device tree document and driver, the second patch add support for
S6E3HA2 panel device tree.
Change for V5:
- The V5 has only one fix in V4 below.
- Removed the enable check of the mic driver in mode_set
callback, because mode_set should be performed every time.
Changes for V4:
- Removed display-timings in devicetree, the display-timings has
been fixed to be provided by the device driver.
- Added the mode_set callback function into exynos_drm_mic,
because the exynos_drm_mic driver can not parse a videomode
struct by removing the display-timings from the devicetree.

ath10k does something similar. IIRC we currently support four different,
and incompatible, firmware releases now.

That's also my preference. And I read somewhere (forgot where) that in
kernel summit there was a discussion about having only regression fixes
in -rc kernels. So the rules are getting stricter, which is a good thing
as then we can make releases in a shorter cycle.

The git-scm.com site uses asciidoctor, too, and I think I have seen some
oddness with the rendering though. So in general I am in favor of making
things work under both asciidoc and asciidoctor.
I diffed the results of "make user-manual.html" before and after this
patch. A lot of "h3" chapter titles get bumped to "h2", which is OK. The
chapter titles now say "Chapter 1. Repositories and Branches" rather
than just "Repositories and Branches". Likewise, references now say
Chapter 1, _Repositories and Branches_
rather than:
the section called "Repositories and Branches".
which is probably OK, though the whole thing is short enough that
calling the sections chapters feels a bit over-important. Chapters now
get their own table of contents, too. This is especially silly in
one-section chapters like "Git Glossary".
So I dunno. I really do think "article" is conceptually the most
appropriate style, but I agree that there are some book-like things
(like appendices).
