I'm now running two systems with Jeff's patches for pulling entropy from the host's /dev/random. The first host I boot comes up fine (successfully loads rngd). However, the second fails to load rngd. I 'm getting back a return code of '1' from the daemon (the rng-source is misbehaving) after a pause of 10 seconds. Any ideas?

Okay, this is a little weird. It worked the first time I attempted to start it. However, I then killed it, killed rngd on the first host and restarted it on the first host. Now it fails again on the second host.
I'm wondering if the first host to launch is exhausting the entropy pool and the second host is attempting to read from an empty pool. If this is the case, then I have no idea how you could resolve this with multiple UML instances per host. In any case, here is the strace:

Maybe the host /dev/random supports only one user at any given moment.

The strace would seem to bear this out:

This looks to me like "read from hwrng, but give up after 10 seconds
if nothing happens".

Can you read /dev/random on the host directly during this time? If
not, and you are out of entropy, I would say you need to find a source
of more of it.

No, when I was testing it, I had concurrent dd if=/dev/random going on the
host and UML to check that they got about the same amount of data.
