Jaroslav,
Please would you wait and not release ALSA 1.0
until the OSS-mode MIDI sequencer is either working (I do not mean
the ALSA-mode MIDI sequencer which is working fine) or my
bug report has been invalidated.
I posted a very long and detailed message about this bug 5 months ago
but nobody has replied either to confirm the bug or
to explain how to solve it.
My post confirming the bug exists despite trying various suggestions:
http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/12349/2002/11/50/10175805/
If anyone looks at this bug, _please_ download my statically linked
OSS sequencer software (Rosegarden) to test ALSA's OSS-mode sequencer
with a MIDI keyboard:
http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/12349/2002/11/50/10178064/
(it is no good testing ALSA's ALSA-mode sequencer because that
certainly works; also, if you do not have a MIDI keyboard,
you will not be able to test the bug properly).
By the way, I need to use ALSA's OSS-mode sequencer so as to use Rosegarden
(still the best Linux software for large-scale score-based composition).
I first reported a possible bug in August 2002:
http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/12350/2002/8/300/9242078/
and I followed up to confirm the bug and that the suggestions don't work:
http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/12349/2002/8/0/9412777/
and
http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/12350/2002/8/100/9396683/
I sincerely hope I am wrong and there is really no bug that
could hold up ALSA 1.0 but in which case I'd appreciate your help
in understanding how I should use ALSA's OSS-mode sequencer with
a MIDI keyboard.
Thanks to anyone who can solve this longstanding problem.
William

don't worry, we will NOT release ALSA 1.0 yet.
we'll release only the ALSA 0.9.0-final without rc or beta suffix.
that is, the 0.9 serie will be officialy a stable version - that's
all.

Wily,
Thanks for your suggestions but I'm not sure I explained what I'm trying
to do clearly enough. I use MIDI keyboards.
As I said in my earlier postings I need to use
ALSA's *OSS-mode* sequencer with a MIDI *keyboard* and
the original Rosegarden version 2.1p4 (or earlier)
e.g. http://www.liam2.demon.co.uk/rosegarden.tar.bz2
I do not want to use the sequencer to play MIDI files on my soundcard.
I know ALSA's ALSA-mode sequencer works fine with MIDI keyboards
but I cannot use it. This is because the original OSS-mode Rosegarden
is the best large-scale score-based composition software.
I have tried alternative software for the ALSA-mode sequencer
such as the new Rosegarden, Brahms, Noteedit, and of course Muse
but frankly none of them is as efficient as the original Rosegarden
for handling *large-scale* score writing.
I've got a Soundblaster AWE64 Gold, whose OSS-mode sequencer works
fine with MIDI keyboards using OSSFree sound drivers and the
original OSS-mode Rosegarden. The problem is that ALSA's
OSS-mode sequencer appears broken with MIDI keyboards.
The awemidi package from Takashi Iwai's AWE32 driver
provides drvmidi, txtplay, miditext and tkmidi but
none of these work with MIDI keyboards and ALSA's OSS-mode sequencer.
To anyone reading this, please try using a MIDI keyboard with ALSA's
OSS-mode sequencer. You cannot see the bug without using a MIDI keyboard
and ALSA's OSS-mode sequencer.
Thanks Wily for replying to my question.

In that case, please would you wait and not release ALSA 0.9.0-final

Have you got a MIDI keyboard? If so, could you test ALSA's OSS-mode
sequencer with OSS-mode Rosegarden 2.1p4 to verify the bug in ALSA?
Thanks,
William
