I'm using gentoo linux ver 1.4rc1 on a G4 cube with gcc3.2 and
alsa-0.9.0rc3 and am having some major problems getting alsa to work
properly.
When trying to use the native alsa interface, most programs either give
out just static or if they manage to play something coherent, the output
is noisy and sounds as if it has been clipped.
If I try to use the OSS emulation, I get error messages like:
No supported rate found
or
** WARNING **: SNDCTL_DSP_SETFMT ioctl failed: Invalid argument
(The first is from mpg123 and the second is from xmms).
After this message, mpg123 just quits. Xmms however, continues to
function and actually gives clear, coorect output. So far, no other
program works.
Any ideas on what might be happening? I had a similar effect with
alsa-0.9.0rc2 on gentoo linux 1.2 using gcc-2.95.3.

which device are you using?

please try the cvs version if you use a usb driver.
the usb driver has been changed largely since rc3.
also, please send me the output of "lsusb -v" for the device.
this will help debugging very much.

I upgraded my drivers to the latest usb version and now mpg123 works.
However, the native alsa interface still doesn't seem to work.
Running xmms with the native alsa plugin still produces just static.

do you mean that the playback position moves but no sounds come out?
and does oss plugin work?

With the alsa plugin, the playback position moves and I get stuff that
just sounds like static instead of music (the volume controls still work).
The oss plugin works fine.
I just tried another test by doing:
mpg321 -s /mnt/mp3/Mpegs/Anime/Arc\ en\ Ciel,\ Le/DIVE_T~1.MP3 | aplay -c
2 -t raw -r 44100 -f S16_LE -
Which worked properly. Is it possible that xmms, esd, mplayer, etc are
the broken ones?

i don't think all of them are broken.
possibly this behavior might be influenced by the period size, etc.
can you check /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params at each case and
compare them?

ok, the above means that the pcm supports three different formats,
16bit and 24bit, one or two channels for S16_LE.
it looks ok.
btw, if you look at this file during the pcm is running, the running
status is also shown.

So I tried playing the same mp3 in 3 methods. The first was using xmms
through its oss output device. The second was using xmms with its alsa
plugin. The third was using the pipe of raw sound data from mpg123 to
aplay (mpg321 -s /mnt/mp3/Mpegs/Anime/Arc\ en\ Ciel,\ Le/DIVE_T~1.MP3 |
aplay -c 2 -t raw -r 44100 -f S16_LE -). Here's the output of hw_params

hmm, most likely the same reason.
esd requests big-endian formats (as native machine format), which are
not supported on usb devices.

ditto. you need to convert endianess. plughw:0,0 will do that.

I started hacking at the code. It looks like the xmms alsa plugin is fine
(if a bit messy). However, it looks like their mpg123 input plugin is
always output big-endian data even when it says it is outputing the native
format data...hrm... I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. In
either case, it's their bug so I'm bugging them about it now.

I tried esd -d plughw:0,0 and it worked over here. Is it more proper to
communicate to alsa through plughw rather than hw? It sounds like this
interface is the smarter way to go... I'm hesitating before suggesting
this to esound or mplayer since I'd rather not suggest something wrong.

I had shot some emails around with the esound maintainers regarding using
plughw:# instead of hw:# as the default device and it was decided to leave
it at hw:#. I'd prefer it to be plughw as well.
In the meantime, if you need plughw:# to make you card work, just
put it in the spawn options in /etc/esd.conf (or /etc/esd/esd.conf depending on
dist)
