Inspiron 8200 and the CS4205

..main reason for joining this list, is it ever going to be fixed? :)

Here is what i've learned about all my experiences so far with the
Inspiron 8200 and the CS4205:

My kernel right now, it works fine for a few minutes then starts playing
extremely choppy.. until I remove the module. Odd thing, if I turn APM
off, this still happens but not as quick.

And, when device is opened or closed, loud pops and clicks that I am
pretty sure aren't good for my speakers at loud volumes happen..


I'm at a loss kinda here -- the oss/free drivers play audio but thats
about it. If anyone has got this working or can help me, I'd appreciate
it alot..

I would help with any developmental issues but my knowledge in coding
things related to sound drivers are extremely lacking :/

which driver?  maestro3 or intel8x0?

I have similar problems with my Inspiron 4100.

It has an ICH3 (i830M -- intel8x0) and a CS4205 codec.

Basically, some apps stutter immediately on playback (kinda like the
helicopter noise he was describing), and others start okay, but sometimes
start and stop stuttering seemingly at random in mid-stream.

in particular, mpg321 (via libao) seems to do this fairly often, while
ogg123 (also via libao) seems to be immune.  SDL apps (using the alsa09
backend) are intermittent, as are a couple of my own creations that hook
into alsa directly.

This has been fairly consitent across multiple ALSA and kernel releases,
including alsa 0.9.0rc3 and current cvs, and kernel 2.4.20-pre5 that I'm
running right now.

Though interestingly enough, if I switch the apps to use oss emulation
instead of native alsa output, things seem to work fine.

i guess this is somehow different phenomenon from the original post.
perhaps this has something to do with the hardware parameters,
especially period size.  could you check
/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_status (and others) at each case to
compare which parameters are used?

hmm... the question is which goes wrong, ich core or ac97 codec.
but anyway this may be involved with some power management.

sorry, so far, no clear idea what's wrong there.
i will take a deeper look at the spec sheet.

PATCH: Via82xx driver

Hi,

Below is a patch that fixes heap corruption in the via driver if the app uses a large nr of periods (> 128).
dev->idx_table is a snd_via_sg_table array, not an integer array.
