Using the default parameteres for the snd-hda-intel module
for my laptop, I could not get sound from the headphones, which
is in the same jack as the SPDIF. So I used the option model=z71v
to make it work. Here is the related info:

Did you try the latest version of ALSA?
There are other models for ASUS, too. I guess they will suit better
to your laptop.

Well just compiled CVS but no sound from headphones, with default
parameters of model=asus. Still have to use z71v model.

Then, z71v must be a right choice.
However, it has still no SPDIF support (I don't know whether z71v
has it, too). Can you test SPDIF?
