Did someone compile the latest tarball ralf made? Does it work? Is it
worth the time it takes to download the xcompiler and the source?

Ok, I downloaded the kernel + xcompiler.
It didn't work, got a compile error. I can't fix it because it's the
gloomy azzemblur again.

yeah. i get exactly the same error messages when compiling on an x86 Linux host.
crosscompiling on an IRIX host worked though (and i could put an image up for
ftp if you like)

Yes, I would appreciate your kernel image on ftp! Is your kernel compiled
for r4x00?

Hello,
I've recently downloaded the hardhat distribution and installed it without
much problems. But the kernel (2.1.100) which comes with the distribution
seems to crash after a day or so. So I tried to compile some other
kernels, but this seems to be a lot trickier than on a i386: I've only
succeeded in compiling a few kernels, of which only one actually worked
(linux-19991209.tar.gz from ftp.linux.sgi.com). Well, 'worked' doens't
really describe what it does, since it seems to be pretty buggy kernel:
Page faults, bus errors,...
Now, my question is: can I get a stable kernel somewhere ?
Bye,
Jori

Sorry about the question to do with visuall gcc. Alot of people seemed to
get a intolerable response to my question. The reason I posted it here was
a) I am lazy, b) On all the sites to do with Kdevelop the download links are
down, and c) I wanted to use the program to compile such files as schedule.c
and other scheduling algorithms I create. What do most of you use to comile
the kernel, just good ole' command line gcc.

Definitely. As much as I appreciate the efforts to make a workable
end-user GUI for Linux, I think people are still going to have to get
used to using command-line tools at the moment. For what it's worth,
there are two visual configuration options for the kernel; for a text
console, you can use "make menuconfig" while you can use "make xconfig"
if you're really into X. Personally, I found the standard "make config"
useful only the first time around, because it forced me to look at every
option, but it's much easier to undo mistakes using menuconfig or xconfig.

I have problem with kernel 2.4.2 from red hat 7.2 distribution.
This problem appears when I type make modules.
and it seems like compiler doesn't understand extern in function
declaration
gcc version 2.96 20000731
Thanks in advance

Does it do this if you start with 'make mrproper' also I asume you mean RH 7.1

Sir
i am working on system call tracing.
i want to check the validity of the system
calls given by users how can i parse them.
Does the linux O.S. also performs parsing ?
how can i make a grammar for the system
call parsing .

The source for the 'strace' utility might be a good place to start
your project. If you want to trace library calls instead of system
calls, try 'ltrace'.

On the Linux kernel archive they list 2.4.19 as the current stable
kernel. When I click on this it downloads patch-2.4.19.
If I go through the directory on the ftp site they have both
linux-2.4.19 (source for the kernel) and the patch-2.4.19. If you get
the linux kernel .19 do you also need the patch? If so do you apply the
patch to the source or to the compile kernel and how do you apply it?
Any help would be appreciated.

No. You only need the patch if you have the source to version .18 and
want the source to version .19.
> If so do you apply the patch to the source or to the compile kernel

The patch would be applied to the source of the previous kernel
version. In general, patches are much, much smaller than full source
distributions, so are easier to download, and more friendly on the
various archive sites.
Different people will give you different recipes for applying patches,
but the one I usually use goes like this:
1) Uncompress the patch.
2) cd to the directory where you have the source to the previous version.
3) ``patch -p1 < path_to_patch''
It's quite rare to find that a patch applies cleanly on the first
attempt; go ``find -name '*.rej' | less'' from the source directory to
find any complaints. These usually indicate that your source pool
didn't quite match the version used to produce the patch (e.g. if
you've specified an EXTRAVERSION in the top level Makefile), and
should be reasonably easy to fix. If you find a reject file
``foo/bar.rej'', open up ``foo/bar.rej'' and ``foo/bar'' in a text
editor, and apply the changes listed in ``foo/bar.rej'' to
``foo/bar''. (This is a lot easier than it sounds).
As always, you should try and use one of the mirrors if at all
possible, rather than the main kernel archive.

Just in case you didn't notice (and want to have the full source), just
click on the "F" a bit to the right and you'll get the full source
immediately.
Otherwise forget that i mentioned it ;)

There is no 'following error' in your message. If you need help
installing linux, perhaps you can find a local users-group, or a
newsgroup in your own language?

It would also be useful if you didn't send messages with silly
disclaimers to publicly archived mailing lists. According to your own
