Hi,
Here is the v3 of my patchset that updates the MTD spi-nor code as well
as the spi-mem code, to add support for panic mem writes to a memory
partition configured as pstore.
Changelog:
- [1/7]:
- Use pm_runtime_active() instead of pm_runtime_get_if_active().
The latter cannot be used in a panic context.
- Forbid fallback to regular SPI on panic
- [2/7]:
- Set 'timeout_ms' parameter to u64 to prevent u32 overflow
- [3/7]:
- Use GFP_KERNEL xor GFP_ATOMIC
- Patch 4->7 unchanged.
Cheers,
-Paul

Add a 'panic_write' flag to the controller's capabilities struct.
When set, the SPI controller indicates that it will be able to send
commands to a connected NOR or NAND memory in the context of a kernel
panic, which means without sleeping and without relying on IRQs.
Whether or not a given memory operation is a panic mem write is given by
the spi_mem_op.panic_write flag.

Notes:
v2: - Don't call spi_mem_access_start/end on panic. We don't need to
flush the SPI queue at that point, and we don't need to lock the
mutexes.
- Check that the SPI controller's PM status is active, and bail out
otherwise.
v3: - Use pm_runtime_active() instead of pm_runtime_get_if_active(). The
latter cannot be used in a panic context.
- Forbid fallback to regular SPI on panic

Instead of polling for the spi_nor_ready() with a custom loop, use
poll_timeout_us(). The sleep period between two polls is set to 100 us
which I think should be fine.
This will make it simpler to support waiting for the SPI NOR in atomic
context later.

If the SPI controller supports it, provide the functionality of doing a
panic write.
Update the spi-nor core code and controllers to make sure they won't try
to grab locked mutexes or sleep when doing a panic write, as preemption
and IRQs are disabled.
The information is carried down to the SPI controller driver through the
spi_mem_op structure. If the corresponding flag is set there, and the
SPI driver does support panic writes, it then has to respect the same
rules.

When polling for the "SDMA ready" event, once the corresponding bit is
set in the CDNS_XSPI_SDMA_TRIGGER we should reset it to zero. Otherwise,

Make the interrupt line optional. If not provided, the driver will
instead resort to polling registers.
This can be useful in itself, but will be used later to support write on
kernel panic.
Note the cdns_xspi_is_{sdma,stig}_ready() seem to have moved for no
reason; they were actually moved out of a conditional compilation block
(#ifdef CONFIG_64BIT), as they are needed in conf-independent paths now.

Advertise support for panic writes. When a memory op is received with
the 'panic' flag set, the driver will then work without relying on
interrupts and without sleeping.

Notes:
v2: - Don't enable interrupts if doing a panic write
- Use a new cdns_readl_poll() macro that will resolve to calling
readl_relaxed_poll_timeout_atomic() when doing a panic write, or
readl_relaxed_poll_timeout() otherwise.
- Drop cdns_xspi->panic_write. We don't actually need to check it in
cdns_xspi_is_dll_locked(), because this code is never called in
the kernel panic path.
v3: No change

Advertise support for panic writes. When a memory op is received with
the 'panic' flag set, the driver will then work without relying on
interrupts and without sleeping.

Notes:
v2: - Don't enable interrupts if doing a panic write
- Use a new cdns_readl_poll() macro that will resolve to calling
readl_relaxed_poll_timeout_atomic() when doing a panic write, or
readl_relaxed_poll_timeout() otherwise.
- Drop cdns_xspi->panic_write. We don't actually need to check it in
cdns_xspi_is_dll_locked(), because this code is never called in
the kernel panic path.

mtd: spi-nor: Add support for panic writes
This commit introduces the functionality for SPI NOR controllers to perform
panic writes. It attempts to bypass locked mutexes and sleep operations
when doing a panic write, since preemption and IRQs are disabled.

[Severity: High]
Can this kmalloc() call in spi_nor_octal_dtr_write(), and the subsequent
kfree(), cause a deadlock during a panic?
While GFP_ATOMIC prevents the scheduler from sleeping or reclaiming memory,
the SLUB/SLAB memory allocator still fundamentally relies on raw spinlocks
(e.g., kmem_cache_node->list_lock or pcp->lock) for its freelists.
Since spi_nor_panic_write() is invoked in a panic context where local
interrupts are disabled and all other CPUs have been forcibly halted, if
any halted CPU happened to be holding a slab lock at the moment of the
crash, the panicking CPU will spin indefinitely waiting for it.
Should this panic path rely on a pre-allocated buffer (such as
nor->bouncebuf) instead to guarantee the panic dump can be written?

This patch makes the interrupt line optional, adding support for polling
registers instead. The cdns_xspi_is_sdma_ready() and cdns_xspi_is_stig_ready()
functions are updated and moved to handle the polling paths.

[Severity: High]
Does this hardcoded MRVL_XSPI_POLL_TIMEOUT_US timeout break large polling
transfers?
Enforcing a strict 1ms limit on STIG command completion could cause spurious
-EIO aborts for transfers that take longer than 1ms to complete on the SPI
bus (e.g., when operating at low bus frequencies).

[Severity: High]
Is the CDNS_XSPI_SDMA_ERROR mask omitted here?
If the hardware asserts CDNS_XSPI_SDMA_ERROR without CDNS_XSPI_SDMA_TRIGGER,
the driver will wait the full timeout, return false, and fail to clear the
error status, leaving the controller in an unclean state. If both are
asserted, the polling loop will incorrectly return true, causing the driver
to proceed and perform I/O on a failed DMA transaction.
Also, looking at cdns_xspi_irq_handler(), it unconditionally clears all
pending interrupts (including SDMA_TRIGGER) even if the controller's
interrupts are disabled. If a stray interrupt on a shared IRQ line triggers
the handler during this polling phase, it steals the status bits. Could this
cause the polling loop to falsely time out and return -EIO?
> + sleep ? MRVL_XSPI_POLL_DELAY_US : 0,
> + sleep ? MRVL_XSPI_POLL_TIMEOUT_US : 0)) {
[Severity: High]
Similarly, does this hardcoded MRVL_XSPI_POLL_TIMEOUT_US timeout break large
SDMA data transfers?
Large multi-kilobyte transfers bounded by cdns_xspi->sdmasize may take longer
than 1ms, resulting in spurious -EIO aborts.

Does this leave the error bit uncleared?
Since only the trigger bit is cleared, the error bit could remain set in this
write-1-to-clear register if CDNS_XSPI_SDMA_ERROR was also asserted.

[Severity: High]
Does this unbounded wait_for_completion() cause an unkillable task hang?
If the hardware drops the completion interrupt or hangs, wait_for_completion()
blocks indefinitely in TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE mode. Should this use
wait_for_completion_timeout() instead, matching the bounds used in the
polling path?
> + if (cdns_xspi->sdma_error) {
> + cdns_xspi->set_interrupts_handler(cdns_xspi, false);
> + return -EIO;
[Severity: High]
Can returning early here leave cmd_complete unbalanced?
If the hardware later finishes the command and signals CDNS_XSPI_STIG_DONE,
the IRQ handler will complete cmd_complete.
Also, looking at cdns_xspi_irq_handler(), if both CDNS_XSPI_SDMA_ERROR and
CDNS_XSPI_SDMA_TRIGGER are set in the IRQ status register, sdma_complete is
double-completed.
Without a corresponding reinit_completion() before reusing these completions,
both scenarios leave the internal done counters > 0, erroneously satisfying
future transfers.

[Severity: High]
Is it possible for this wait_for_completion() to cause an unkillable task
hang?
Similar to sdma_complete, if the hardware fails to assert the STIG_DONE
interrupt, the thread blocks indefinitely.

spi: cadence-xspi: Clear "SDMA ready" IRQ flag after polling
When polling for the "SDMA ready" event, once the corresponding bit is
set in the CDNS_XSPI_SDMA_TRIGGER we should reset it to zero. Otherwise,
any subsequent call to cdns_xspi_is_sdma_ready() will just return early.

[Severity: High]
Does this code corrupt data on big-endian architectures?
In m_ioreadq(), register accessors are used instead of stream accessors to
read bulk stream data from the SDMA FIFO:
drivers/spi/spi-cadence-xspi.c:m_ioreadq() {
...
do {
u64 b = readq(addr);
*buffer++ = b;
} while (--full_ops);
...
}
Because addr is not incremented, this reads from a FIFO. Register accessors
like readq() perform byte-swapping, which reverses the byte stream within
each 8-byte chunk on big-endian systems.
Similarly, for partial transfers in m_ioreadq():
drivers/spi/spi-cadence-xspi.c:m_ioreadq() {
...
while (len) {
u64 tmp_buf;
tmp_buf = readq(addr);
memcpy(buf, &tmp_buf, min(len, 8));
...
}
Combining a byte-swapping readq() with memcpy() extracts incorrect bytes on
big-endian systems because the reversed 64-bit word places the wrong stream
bytes in the lowest memory addresses.
The same behavior appears in m_iowriteq() when writing to the SDMA FIFO:
drivers/spi/spi-cadence-xspi.c:m_iowriteq() {
...
do {
writeq(*buffer++, addr);
} while (--full_ops);
...
}
Should these be converted to stream accessors to preserve byte order on
big-endian systems?

spi: cadence-xspi: Add support for panic writes
This commit advertises support for panic writes in the Cadence XSPI driver.
When a memory operation is received with the panic flag set, the driver
operates without relying on interrupts and without sleeping.

[Severity: Medium]
Could this unbounded wait lead to a hang if the hardware DMA completion
interrupt is lost during a non-panic SPI memory operation?
The fallback polling path in cdns_xspi_is_sdma_ready() correctly enforces
a timeout, but this interrupt path in cdns_xspi_send_stig_command()
blocks indefinitely in an uninterruptible state.
Does it make sense to use wait_for_completion_timeout() here to prevent
potential kernel lockups from unresponsive hardware?

[Severity: Medium]
Similarly, could this wait for the STIG command completion expose the
system to a hardware-induced hang if the interrupt is dropped?
