Project: ALSA - driver
Issue ID: 1678
Category: PCI - hda-intel
Reproducibility: always
Severity: major
Priority: normal
Status: assigned
Distribution: Ubuntu Breezy
Kernel Version: 2.6.15-rc6-git4

Date Submitted: 12-25-2005 02:29 CET
Last Modified: 12-25-2005 02:29 CET
======================================================================
Summary: nForce (10de:026c) left channel squeals, right
channel mostly okay
Description:
This is an integrated chipset on an ASUS A8N-VM-UAYGZ mobo. Marketing info
is this is an "nForce410" board, with "6-channel HD audio".
Both the ALSA in 2.6.15-rc6-git4 and the 1.0.11rc1 ALSA driver for
snd-hda-intel load fine, but during playback, the left channel squeals,
while the right seems to play things okay.
I'm happy to dig around and try whatever needs trying to get this fixed.
Thanks!

If I do "speaker-test -c4", both front channels work fine. "speaker-test
-c2" fails as above: single tone (or silent) on left channel, right
channel is okay.
Strangely, if I use the rear mobo line out jack (instead of the
front-panel headphone jack), "speaker-test -c4" fails on the left channel
too. Very odd.
And, "speaker-test -c6" doesn't even run. It bombs out with errors:
0 - Front Left
Write error: -5,Input/output error
xrun_recovery failed: -5,Input/output error
Transfer failed: Operation not permitted

Hi all
Just for completeness: I have the same problem on ASUS A8N-VM-CSM mobo
(with AD1986A chip), kernel 2.6.15-rc7, alsa CVS downloaded on Dec,30
2005.
my lspci gives the same as in previous note (with more capabilities !):
0000:00:10.1 0403: 10de:026c (rev a2)
Subsystem: 10de:cb84
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 5
Memory at febd8000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [50] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit+ Queue=0/0
Enable-
Capabilities: [6c] #08 [a802]
It seems that the problem is related to surround sound: see a quick
workaround here =>

Hope this helps !

I can confirm the problems with the ASUS A8N-VM CSM and its AD1986A sound
chip. Kernel 2.6.15rc7 with ALSA 1.0.11rc1 hda-intel results in high
pitched squealing from the front left speaker whenever there is sound
being played over any channel. Results of using speaker-test are the same
as those reported by kees for the ASUS A8N-VM-UAYGZ mobo.

I can confirm the problems with the ASUS A8N-VM CSM and its AD1986A sound

Unfortunately I am interested in surround sound (this is a motherboard

the patch morgoth666 linked to is an incomplete solution at best.
EDIT:
In addition, sound will stop working entirely and apparently randomly,
reboot is the only way to restore it. Nothing in dmesg or
/var/log/messages when this occurs. After this happens speaker-test will
run as normal, without error messages, but no sound is heard. Possibly
related to bug #1415, however there is no obvious correlation with volume
adjustments, volume adjustments can be made without failure of the sound
system and the sound can fail at other times when no volume adjustments
are being made.

Project: ALSA - driver
Issue ID: 1678
Category: PCI - hda-intel
Reproducibility: always
Severity: major
Priority: normal

Distribution: Ubuntu Breezy

Thanks!

Could you try ALSA 1.0.11rc2?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
kees - 01-04-06 17:56
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tried 1.0.11rc2. No changes in any of the behavior. However, I did notice
a behavior I didn't report before that exists in mainline, 1.0.11rc1, and
1.0.11rc2: after module startup, the left channel of the "front" line is
muted. All other settings are okay, though.

Hi,
I would like to confirm this bug on my ASUS A7N-VM CSM
with SoundMax ADI AD1986A 5.1 integrated with the motherboard.
I'm using Ubuntu Breezu, with kernel 2.6.14 .
The system make a horrible noise (trying to play de gdm "welcome" sound)
and after the sound driver seems to crash. However there is no messages in
/var/log/messages or dmesg. But the modules are still loaded :
snd_hda_intel snd_hda_codec snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss, snd_pcm and
snd_timer
I applied successfully the patch :
http://www.nabble.com/Intel-HDA-AD1986A-without-surround-t595968.html
on alsa-driver-1.0.10.
Now the sound seems stable with some litte strange noise (perhaps my
speakers).

Thanks!
