The Fedora Linux kernel 2.6.15-1.1884 is actually 2.6.16-rc1-git4, only
renumbered as the base tarball version 2.6.15 to confuse things.. (and
make Fedora package maintenance considerably easier)

Summary: Sound playback hangs and loops on first buffer
Description:
Trying to play any sound or music produces a never ending loop of the first
1/2 second or so.

Any way you can compare the /proc/asound/cardX/codec* files between the
working and non-working versions?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 hno - 02-03-06 02:43
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is quite some differences, most different mixer settings I think.

You can find a collection of /proc/asound/ entries from different alsa
versions at http://www.henriknordstrom.net/tmp/alsa-bug-1807/

1.0.9b-2.6.14-1.1656_FC4smp-silent
1.0.9b_26-realtek-3.5-6-2.6.14-1.1656_FC4smp-working
1.0.10rc1-2.6.14-1.1656_FC4smp-silent_crashing_alsamixer
1.0.11rc3-2.6.14-1.1656_FC4smp-hanging
1.0.11rc3-2.6.15-1.1884_FC5-hanging

Additionally the sources to realtek 3.5-6 (R3.56) driver (alsa 1.0.9b
based) can be found here:

I guess I could stick with the Realtek driver, if it wasn't for the small
detail that Alsa-driver 1.0.9b doesn't compile with current kernels.. not
sure which would be most work, making 1.0.9b compile, or figuring out why
1.0.10 and later hangs..

Don't know many others using this board, it's fairly new, AMD, and
integrated graphics (i.e. probably not a typical board for the Linux
enthusiast). but I'll look around a little to see who I may find..

Getting closer. There was something between 1.0.10 and 1.0.11rc1 which
broke this.

1.0.10 + the small patch from Bug #1563 works.

1.0.11rc1 fails with the "hanging looping on first buffer" syndrome.

Is there a CVS or similar where I can get the incremental changes between
1.0.10 and 1.0.11rc1? The full diff is a bit too large for me to try to
pinpoint this without knowing the design better...

2005-11-24 16:00 works (at the checkin of the before mentioned patch)
2005-11-24 17:00 fails to detect the codec. (hda_intel.c 1.32)
2005-11-27 00:00 likewise
2005-12-01 00:00 works again..
2005-12-05 00:00 fails with the hanging loop syndrome
now 2005-12-01 00:00 fails again.. odd. must be doing something wrong my
tests. Restarting.

2006-11-30 00:00 fails with the hanging loop syndrome
2006-11-24 16:00 works
2006-11-29 00:00 fails to detect the codec
2006-11-29 00:00 with hda_intel.c 1.32 backed out works.
2006-11-30 00:00 still fails with the looping sound.. (just to verify my
own steps..)
2006-11-30 00:00 with hda_intel.c reverted to revision 1.31 works

Think I see the problem. The handling of positio_fix=0 (auto) changed from
FIFO to POSBUF in hda_intel.c revision 1.32. Maybe or maybe not
intentional (mentioned with other words in the commit message). module
parameter position_fix=3 (FIFO) works.

The commit message says:

hda_intel.c revision 1.32
date: 2005/11/24 16:03:40; author: tiwai; state: Exp; lines: +8 -29
Summary: hda-intel - Use position buffer as default

- Use the position buffer for obtaining the current DMA position
as default. This seems more stable than others.

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/alsa/alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_intel.c?r1=1.31&r2=1.33

Trying HEAD. Also works with position_fix=3.

position_fix=1 (none) also works here.

So my system is apparently one which is incompatible with this change of
how to obtain the DMA position, where the earlier used method actually
worked much better..

   1 (none) works
   2 (POSBUF) fails (current default)
3 (FIFO size) works (old default, kind of..)

I have same motherboard and same problems.
So is there any way to make it works?
Alsa from Realtek doesn't compile on 2.6.16-rc3 kernel and i cat't use
anything else.
Thank you!

Yes, position_fix=1 (or 3) fixes the problem.

/etc/modprobe.conf:

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1

I have some additional notes regarding using Linux on this board posted in
the MSI forum. See <url:http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=93296.0>.
Maybe you will find something useful there. Today I have a Fedora Core 5
test 2 + updates install where everything is working except for 3D
acceleration: sound, clock running normal, SMART control/checks of the
harddrives, fan control etc.

Yes, position_fix=1 (or 3) fixes the problem.

/etc/modprobe.conf:

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1

I have some additional notes regarding using Linux on this board posted in
the MSI forum. See <url:http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=93296.0>.
Maybe you will find something useful there. Today I have a Fedora Core 5
test 2 + updates install where everything is working except for 3D
acceleration: sound, clock running normal, SMART control/checks of the
harddrives, fan control etc.

The CVS version should work. It detects the problematic hardware and use
another method as fallback.
