It is good to know the reason for the error messages but It does not help
me in any way. If would rather have the error messages than stop 'esd'.

The device 0 of ICH5 support 2, 4, 6 channels but only has one subdevice.
You have to stop esd before playing surround51
AFAIK dmix does not support mixing of stereo , surround40 and surround51.

This confirms the name I gave this bug: "Ubuntu5.10 not configured for
Alsa"
It is good to know the reason for the error messages but It does not help
me in any way. If would rather have the error messages than stop 'esd'.

It's strange that you can use aplay to play 6-channels wav.
Post output of
aplay -L
strace -e trace=open -Dsurround51 5.1ChannelFile.wav
Do you still have application which still need esd ?

If the sound card does not support hardware mixing (i.e. subdevices_count:
1), all application need to use 'dmix' throught 'default' device.
You can play surround51 only when subdevices_avail equal to 1

playback device, most likely a sound server daemon open either /dev/dsp or
hw:0
If the sound card does not support hardware mixing, all application need
to use 'dmix' throught 'default' device.

I don't have a customized .asoundrc
aplay reads and plays 6-channel wav files all right but sends error
messages to .xsession-errors if invoked with -Dsurround51.

I don't want to be an audio expert, I just want to use Linux.
I bought a set of 'Home Cinema' speakers and naively thought it would be a
matter of plug and play.
Well it was not. It took me more than one week of fiddling with ALSA,
Linux kernel, etc, until I could use my new speakers.
Now it works all right but still there is no master volume control -gnome
volume control only affects FrontLeft and FrontRight channels- and all
applications using surround51 send continuous error messages to
.xsession-errors. xine has an extra problem sometimes refusing to play
surround51 movies:

Forgive me if I am mistaken but I think ALSA should be more
'intelligent':
All audio streams carry number of channels information, neither user nor
applications need to specify the number of channels to ALSA (Why 'aplay
-Dsurround51 5.1File.wav'?). A line in ALSA configuration file specifying
the number of speakers available should be enough to have it map audio
channels into available output channels.

The slave of dmix is hw, this means the 'hw' is already used by other
application (e.g. web browser plugin - flash, sound server running in
background, ...)
Do you have a customized .asoundrc ?
AFAIK, aplay cannot read a 6-channels wav file. (RIFF)
You may try the ALSA upmix plugin ( require alsa-1.0.11 or later ) for
upmix stereo to 6-channels.

I don't have a customized .asoundrc
aplay reads and plays 6-channel wav files all right but sends error
messages to .xsession-errors if invoked with -Dsurround51.

I don't want to be an audio expert, I just want to use Linux.
I bought a set of 'Home Cinema' speakers and naively thought it would be a
matter of plug and play.
Well it was not. It took me more than one week of fiddling with ALSA,
Linux kernel, etc, until I could use my new speakers.
Now it works all right but still there is no master volume control -gnome
volume control only affects FrontLeft and FrontRight channels- and all
applications using surround51 send continuous error messages to
.xsession-errors. xine has an expra problem sometimes refusing to play
surround51 movies:

Forgive me if I am mistaken but I think ALSA should be more
'intelligent':
All audio streams carry number of channels information, neither user nor
applications need to specify the number of channels to ALSA (Why 'aplay
-Dsurround51 5.1File.wav'?). A line in ALSA configuration file specifying
the number of speakers available should be enough to have it map audio
channels into available output channels.

My motherboard has 5 jacks:
-Rear_Left/Rear_Right
-Centre/Sub
-Mic_In
-Line_In
-Front_Left/Front_Right
All applications are configured for ALSA except for audacity.
I prefer to use distribution packages and compile applications only if
there is no other way to install them. I avoid distribution audacity error
messages invoking it with:

"just one instance of surround51" means "just one instance of surround51"
not "stereo" plus "surround51".
I have been living with this problem for so long that it does not bother
me any more.
Next year I'll update to the latest Ubuntu. I hope it includes a version
of ALSA which works all right with surround51.

Most motherboard has only 3 jacks and rear ,center/lfe jack have to share
with mic/line in jack
This means you cannot perform analog surround51 and capture through
mic/line in concurrently
The OSS application open /dev/dsp exclusively, you need to configure your
sound application to use ALSA or use aoss
The default device of ALSA ntel8x0 driver is configured to use 'dmix'
which allow two or more ALSA application to play mono/stereo sound. This
means that you cannot play stereo and surround51 concurrently.
You have to compile audacity from source (1.2.4 or later) to support ALSA
./configure --with-portaudio=v19
However audacity require exclusive access of the sound card for best
quality of multi-channels capture, it only use 'hw' device instead of
'dsnoop'.
If possible, upgrade to alsa-1.0.12rc1 as there are a number of dmix bugs
fixed and fix for ALC650 codec

My motherboard has 5 jacks:
-Rear_Left/Rear_Right
-Centre/Sub
-Mic_In
-Line_In
-Front_Left/Front_Right
All applications are configured for ALSA except for audacity.
I prefer to use distribution packages and compile applications only if
there is no other way to install them. I avoid distribution audacity error
messages invoking it with:

"just one instance of surround51" means "just one instance of surround51"
not "stereo" plus "surround51".
I have been living with this problem for so long that it does not bother
me any more.
Next year I'll update to the latest Ubuntu. I hope it includes a version
of ALSA which works all right with surround51.

It is more than a year since I reported this bug and yours is the first
reply.
With just one instance of surround51 .xsession-errors still fills with:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:819:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
All applications are configured as you suggest except for audacity
(portaudiolib is installed in my system but I don't know how to use it
with audacity).
Please have a look to:

Another report of the bug with same results as in
bugtrack.alsa-project.org (I.E.: No useful suggestions).
Don't have the channels swap problem.

The intel8x0 does not support hardware mixing, dmix only support stereo.
This means you can only one instance of surround51.
esd - stop any sound server

The intel8x0 does not support hardware mixing, dmix only support stereo.
This means you can only one instance of surround51.
esd - stop any sound server
audacity - use portaudio=v19 which support alsa
xmms - use alsa output plugin
mplayer - use -ao alsa
xine - use alsa
Do you have the channels swap problem as described in
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1369 ?

All kinds of files and DVDs (Multichannel AC3) play Ok.
.xsession-errors fills with:

No error Message
No StdError error messages
All kinds of files and DVDs play Ok. Multichannel AC3 downshifted to 2
Channels.
