Summary: Skype Does not work with aoss
Description:
I downloaded alsa-oss-1.0.9rc2 and install by
# ./configure --with-aoss=yes && make && make install
as root. Virtually every program works except skype
(http://www.skype.com/) version 1.1.0.13_API. I downloaded the Fedora
version of skype from the skype official website. Skype only uses
/dev/dsp. I guess skype uses /dev/dsp as microphone input as well. I could
not hear anything and the microphone did not work as well if I run skype
like aoss /usr/bin/skype. If I run skype without aoss, then skype works
just fine.

Summary: Skype Does not work with aoss
Description:
I downloaded alsa-oss-1.0.9rc2 and install by
# ./configure --with-aoss=yes && make && make install
as root. Virtually every program works except skype
(http://www.skype.com/) version 1.1.0.13_API. I downloaded the Fedora
version of skype from the skype official website. Skype only uses
/dev/dsp. I guess skype uses /dev/dsp as microphone input as well. I could
not hear anything and the microphone did not work as well if I run skype
like aoss /usr/bin/skype. If I run skype without aoss, then skype works
just fine.

Ah, OK, I see you use 1.0.10. Try the latest version (CVS or 1.0.11-rc*).
Also what are the exact symptoms - does it segfault still?

Hetfield - 01-05-06 22:01
----------------------------------------------------------------------
no, check the bug 1224, i still have the same problems.
seg fault was fixed lots time ago.
the problem is:
1) setting the suggested values in my .asoundrc skype works with aoss
(OK!!)
2) complete dmix system gets faked. i mean..xmms and mplayer (with skype
closed) can't use sound drivers.
3) as 2), using skype with aoss is useless, cause other devices can't use
dsp at the same time.
removing .asoundrc settings fix the 2) but, obviusly keeps 1).
i can do a fast summary:
i hear mp3s/watch dvd. can i hear skype ring in the meanwhile?
actually not.
ps. card is always ens1370

I'm using a Shuttle SN25P, which is an nForce4 motherboard with onboard
ice1724.
I use 1.0.11rc2 card's config file to have mutilple apps playing at the
same time.
I use a chrooted environment to run skype.
I've almost skype working:
I've got the call ringing (no sound blocking). But after the call
establishment, it is sound less: I can't hear what the other party is
saying and they can't hear me neither.

Summary: Skype Does not work with aoss
Description:
I downloaded alsa-oss-1.0.9rc2 and install by
# ./configure --with-aoss=yes && make && make install
as root. Virtually every program works except skype
(http://www.skype.com/) version 1.1.0.13_API. I downloaded the Fedora
version of skype from the skype official website. Skype only uses
/dev/dsp. I guess skype uses /dev/dsp as microphone input as well. I could
not hear anything and the microphone did not work as well if I run skype
like aoss /usr/bin/skype. If I run skype without aoss, then skype works
just fine.

I am afraid these Skype+aoss problems may be unfixable from the ALSA side.
It appears that the Skype binary is self modifying and takes extensive
measures to make sure it is not being run in a debugger or emulator. This
almost certainly would eliminate any LD_PRELOAD hacks from working.
http://www.secdev.org/conf/skype_BHEU06.handout.pdf
I believe the only solution to get Skype working with dmix etc. is for the
Skype developers to add proper native ALSA support.

ok i have now skype working with aoss and dmix. solution found somewhere in
the web, not only mine...
1) i have whole .11rc4
2) i have .asoundrc pasted below (yes i know i should use no more it)
3) start skype this way:
export ALSA_OSS_PCM_DEVICE="skype"
aoss /opt/skype/skype.bin --resources-path /opt/skype/
it works with dmix, i can listen mplayer and use skype audio
only a notice: whould be so nice if next alsa could implement such things

If Hetfield 's solution work, this may mean the problem is dsnoop in stead
of dmix.
The OSS application try to capture mono, but the ALSA driver of most
on-board audio chip only support stereo capture instead of mono

Summary: Skype Does not work with aoss
Description:
I downloaded alsa-oss-1.0.9rc2 and install by
# ./configure --with-aoss=yes && make && make install
as root. Virtually every program works except skype
(http://www.skype.com/) version 1.1.0.13_API. I downloaded the Fedora
version of skype from the skype official website. Skype only uses
/dev/dsp. I guess skype uses /dev/dsp as microphone input as well. I could
not hear anything and the microphone did not work as well if I run skype
like aoss /usr/bin/skype. If I run skype without aoss, then skype works
just fine.

If Hetfield 's solution work, this may mean the problem is dsnoop in stead
of dmix.
The OSS application try to capture mono, but the ALSA driver of most
on-board audio chip only support stereo capture instead of mono

pzad - 06-08-06 17:30

Look at SNDCTL_DSP_CHANNELS in OSS API reference.
There is:
The returned value may be different than the one requested. The
application must check the returned value and re-adjust it's operation
based on that information.
Skype wants mono, but from ALSA gets stereo. If I look at OSS API
reference, it is skype fault (it doesn't check return value).
