Summary:                    Can't use rear speaker channels
Description: 
I'm using a Shuttle SN25P, which is an nForce4 motherboard with onboard
ice1724.  I've spent most of tonight trying to get surround sound to
work... but the best I can get is four channels (specifically, front
left/right, center, LFE).  Nothing happens when samples are sent to the
rear channels.  And the front channels are mirrored onto the rear
speakers, under control of the Headphone volume control.

Which is really annoying, because it means that muting the master volume
doesn't mute the back speakers.

I realize this isn't much information.  I don't know what else to check
but I'll be glad to debug it if someone can give me a pointer.

Fixed! :-)
I just replace the card config file.

I can play xmms and mplayer at the same time.

Now my problem is: I want to use skype... 
I found an aoss wiki, and the first thing they ask to test is :
 aplay -D plug:dmix one_file.wav &  aplay -D plug:dmix one_file.wav

I have the following error:

ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:812:(snd_pcm_direct_initialize_slave) requested or
auto-format is not available
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:831:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to initialize slave
aplay: main:544: audio open error: Invalid argument


I have this error when running just one:  aplay -D plug:dmix one_file.wav

I still configured /etc/asound.conf and tried skype. Skype runs fine but I
go back to my initial problem: it blocks the device for other
applications!

The advice on that wiki is outdated; aplay one_file.wav & aplay
one_file.wav should work.
