Summary: Can't use rear speaker channels
Description:
I'm using a Shuttle SN25P, which is an nForce4 motherboard with onboard
ice1724. I've spent most of tonight trying to get surround sound to
work... but the best I can get is four channels (specifically, front
left/right, center, LFE). Nothing happens when samples are sent to the
rear channels. And the front channels are mirrored onto the rear
speakers, under control of the Headphone volume control.
Which is really annoying, because it means that muting the master volume
doesn't mute the back speakers.
I realize this isn't much information. I don't know what else to check
but I'll be glad to debug it if someone can give me a pointer.

I just replace the card config file.
I can play xmms and mplayer at the same time.
Now my problem is: I want to use skype...
I found an aoss wiki, and the first thing they ask to test is :
aplay -D plug:dmix one_file.wav & aplay -D plug:dmix one_file.wav
I have the following error:
ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:812:(snd_pcm_direct_initialize_slave) requested or
auto-format is not available
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:831:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to initialize slave
aplay: main:544: audio open error: Invalid argument
I have this error when running just one: aplay -D plug:dmix one_file.wav
I still configured /etc/asound.conf and tried skype. Skype runs fine but I
go back to my initial problem: it blocks the device for other
applications!

I have just installed wengophone to investigate, and its device selection
is incorrect: it only allows the choice of the hw devices, and anything
defined in ~/.asoundrc - making it impossible to select the "default" PCM
required for dmix to work.
You may be able to work around this by defining a PCM in ~/.asoundrc that
is just an alias for the "default" PCM. But this bug should really be
reported to the openwengo developers.

openwengo should work too - apps do not have to do anything special to

skype. chrooted user is same, groups are ported to the chroot
environment, /dev is binded...

Summary: Can't use rear speaker channels
Description:
I'm using a Shuttle SN25P, which is an nForce4 motherboard with onboard
ice1724. I've spent most of tonight trying to get surround sound to
work... but the best I can get is four channels (specifically, front
left/right, center, LFE). Nothing happens when samples are sent to the
rear channels. And the front channels are mirrored onto the rear
speakers, under control of the Headphone volume control.
Which is really annoying, because it means that muting the master volume
doesn't mute the back speakers.
I realize this isn't much information. I don't know what else to check
but I'll be glad to debug it if someone can give me a pointer.

Hi,
I have a SN25P too, and I have the same problem... I did not investigate
more because I a 2.1 speakers system...
But there is an anoying thing: sound cannot be used by more than 1 app at
the same time.. If I have xmms playing a music, and I start mplayer to
play a movie, mplayer will hang until I stop xmms.
Do you have the same problem?

Still no luck with this. However, I now have Windows installed on the same
machine, and the VIA drivers can talk to the rear speakers just fine. Is
there any way I can dump useful information from the chip registers while
in Windows?

I don't know if this is related, but if I use ttable to remap channels, I
get strange results. I can map the center channel of a sample to the
center speaker, or to the front speakers. But I can't map the front
