Summary: autodetection fails
Description:
i own a asus a8v (kt800pro) deluxe motherboard. it has a realtec alc850
ac97 codec....
i though this codec was supported
when i load the snd-via82xx dont detect it... and none of the alsa modules
say anything... not in screen, not kernel messages (dmesg), neither in
/var/log/*...
i have a bt878 tv card (bttv works perfectly) and snd-bt87x have the same
problem that snd-via82xx... doesnt identify the card... but at least i can
manually set the boot_all parameter....
this tv card was correctly detected with my last motherboard asus a7v-600
(kt600)
i alsa tried to build alsa into the kernel (not like modules), but i get
the same results
any idea?

ASUS response was that onboard sound is disabled when a pci sound card is
present due to chipset's limitations.... They said that is a chipset
limitation not a bios limitation (or "feature"). Personally i dont belive
that.
Finally, i gave up and removed the maxi sound isis and installed in
another machine.

That's unfortunate. Closed -> broken hardware.

Summary: autodetection fails
Description:
i own a asus a8v (kt800pro) deluxe motherboard. it has a realtec alc850
ac97 codec....
i though this codec was supported
when i load the snd-via82xx dont detect it... and none of the alsa modules
say anything... not in screen, not kernel messages (dmesg), neither in
/var/log/*...
i have a bt878 tv card (bttv works perfectly) and snd-bt87x have the same
problem that snd-via82xx... doesnt identify the card... but at least i can
manually set the boot_all parameter....
this tv card was correctly detected with my last motherboard asus a7v-600
(kt600)
i alsa tried to build alsa into the kernel (not like modules), but i get
the same results
any idea?

ASUS A8V BIOS has a "feature" which cannot be disabled: if a PCI sound card
is present, the onboard sound is disabled automatically. Therefore you
need to remove your Guillemot card in order to use the onboard sound.
Apparently some BIOS versions had bugs in this check - they recognized
some TV tuner cards as sound cards and disabled the onboard sound; if
VIA8237 still does not appear after removing the Guillemot sound card, but
appears after you also remove yor bt878 card, you may need to update BIOS.

El Santo - 04-22-05 21:28

vsu: you are right...
amazingly the sound works perfect after removing guillemot card...
i'm going to write to asus to ask them to remove this pathetic feature...
i need the guillemot isis card
thanx and regards

i check the lspci output and didnt find the entry for VIA8233/8235/8237.
but i revised BIOS and sound is enabled!
I attach the output of lspci -vv...
you'll see a "Guillemot" entry... that one is of a "guillemot maxi sound
isis" that works only with win 98/me...
thats why i need the onboard sound!
regards ant thank you

Check lspci whether you have the entry for VIA8233/8235/8237. If not, it's
likely a BIOS configuration that you disabled the onboard sound.
