Summary: snd-mpu401 don't load
Description:
I have a Aopen MX63LE board with onboard sound managed by snd-via82xx
driver. It loads all necesary modules, includind snd-mpu401-uart, but no
snd-mpu401
The audio part of the driver works perfectly, but the midi port doesn't
work.

In BIOS i can set (and see) the mpu401 port (0x300 or 0x330) but there is
not a MPU401 IRQ setting in bios. When i tried to manually load snd-mpu401
(setting the port accordingly to BIOS) it doesnt work. I don't know the
mpu401 irq setting but i tryed them all. None of them worked. The driver
says "device not found".

Under windows xp the port works perfectly, so the hardware is ok. Anyway
under windows xp, i use a "system inspector" to monitor ioports and irq
usage, and i didnt see any irq assigned for mpu401 port, and the port
(0x330) wasn't occupied neither.

any idea?

What does that have to do with the driver failing to detect the MPU port?

May be via82c686b cannot use PCI BAR2 as mpu port when it BAR2 is > 0x1000

Can you try 1.0.12-rc1?

Do you mean no error message in system log (dmesg) when snd-via82xx is
loaded ?

(0x330) wasn't occupied neither.

any idea?

but what i want is to record/play music with a external midi keyboard.
I report i was using a 1.0.11 version of alsa because that was the output
of `amidi -V`.

The alsa drivers are those included with debian kernel 2.6.15-1-686. I'm
not sure about how to ask the system to tell the drivers version.

Please note that mpu401 is for midi keyboard and synth through midi cable ,
if you just want to play midi file, install software synth (e.g.
timidity).

http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-kernel?cmd=changeset;node=ad7a63c4db69;style=gitweb

The source code of snd-via686a (alsa-0.9) seem not available on CVS
anymore after merge into via82xx.c

but what i want is to record/play music with a external midi keyboard.
I report i was using a 1.0.11 version of alsa because that was the output
of `amidi -V`.

The alsa drivers are those included with debian kernel 2.6.15-1-686. I'm
not sure about how to ask the system to tell the drivers version.

(0x330) wasn't occupied neither.

any idea?

I follow the thread but i fond no solution there.

Please note that mpu401 is for midi keyboard and synth through midi cable ,
if you just want to play midi file, install software synth (e.g.
timidity).

aplaymidi -l

(0x330) wasn't occupied neither.

any idea?

Are the BIOS setting (onboard sound) of your MX36LE similar to KT3-AV ?

If you are using ALSA-1.0.11, snd-seq-dummy (midi through) should be at
port 14.

How do you install alsa-driver, alsa-lib, alsa-utils ?

What does that have to do with the driver failing to detect the MPU port?

I tryed with and without "pci=routeirq" and "lapic".
I also set mpu_port parameter for snd-via82xx module.

The result is the same: no midi port

(0x330) wasn't occupied neither.

any idea?

The mpu_port value must match with BIOS setup, it seem that the driver is
unable to obtain BIOS setup in snd_via82xx_init_misc()

I tryed with and without "pci=routeirq" and "lapic".
I also set mpu_port parameter for snd-via82xx module.

The result is the same: no midi port

(0x330) wasn't occupied neither.

any idea?

i attached the dmesg output... i thing that the entries in ioports are
addresses managed by kernel modules... if the module is not loaded i think
that the port will not be in ioports.

No, they would still show up. For example I have no Firewire driver
loaded. But it still shows up in ioports:

It must be a kernel bug if the port does not appear in /proc/ioports.

Please attach dmesg output (do not paste it inline)

Does this mean the BIOS is disabling the device?

Summary: snd-mpu401 don't load
Description:
I have a Aopen MX63LE board with onboard sound managed by snd-via82xx
driver. It loads all necesary modules, includind snd-mpu401-uart, but no
snd-mpu401
The audio part of the driver works perfectly, but the midi port doesn't

In BIOS i can set (and see) the mpu401 port (0x300 or 0x330) but there is
not a MPU401 IRQ setting in bios. When i tried to manually load snd-mpu401

mpu401 irq setting but i tryed them all. None of them worked. The driver
says "device not found".

Under windows xp the port works perfectly, so the hardware is ok. Anyway
under windows xp, i use a "system inspector" to monitor ioports and irq
usage, and i didnt see any irq assigned for mpu401 port, and the port
(0x330) wasn't occupied neither.

any idea?

Doesn't "gameport" conflict with "snd-mpu401"?

Try blacklisting gameport and/or snd-mpu401-uart, reboot and try again

Actually never mind - neither 0x300 nor 0x330 appear in ioports.

Does this mean the BIOS is disabling the device?

Summary: snd-mpu401 don't load
Description:
I have a Aopen MX63LE board with onboard sound managed by snd-via82xx
driver. It loads all necesary modules, includind snd-mpu401-uart, but no
snd-mpu401
The audio part of the driver works perfectly, but the midi port doesn't

(0x330) wasn't occupied neither.

any idea?

Usually snd-mpu401 can be loaded without module options using ACPI PnP.

(0x330) wasn't occupied neither.

any idea?

Usually snd-mpu401 can be loaded without module options using ACPI PnP.
