OK, the attached is the patch to add a new quirk value "bind_hp".
Pass ac97_quirk=bind_hp. If this works, let me know the PCI subsystem IDs
(lspci -nv output).

Isn't it nice to have separate volume controls for different outputs ;)
ATM, I'm not sure which fix (or implemention) would be the right way.
We can use the soft-volume control, or bind both volumes in the driver,
and hide the headphone volume.
