Summary: No sound from Soundblaster Live USB since updating
kernel drivers to 1.0.10.rc3
Description:
Every kernel since 2.6.14 (I have tried rc1, mm1, mm2, and rc2) has left
my external USB sound card broken. It appears to be something in the
alsa-git-2005-11-07.patch that was posted to LKML on 11/07/05:
subject: [ALSA UPDATE] 1.0.10rc3
message-id:
<Pine.LNX.4.61.0511071457480.8818@tm8103.perex-int.cz>
Applying this alsa update to 2.6.14 also renders the card silent. The
card
is visible in /proc/asound/cards, alsamixer sees it and I can adjust the
volume, but I get no sound from xmms, mplayer, etc. I tried enabling alsa
debug and verbose printk but I was unable to find any additional messages
from dmesg or in any log files. The card is a Creative Labs SoundBlaster
Live 24-bit external. I'm using the SPDIF output to run sound through a
home theater system. I'm running debian unstable on a Toshiba laptop.

Um, no, you'll just have to wait for this bug to be fixed.

OK so it broke between 1.0.10-rc2 and 1.0.10-rc3. Please use ALSA CVS to
do a binary search ("cvs update -D 2005-11-01 -A", "cvs update -D
2005-12-01 -A" etc) to identify the patch that broke it.

Clemens, have you looked at this lately? It seems to have been narrowed
down to a specific change, the addition of prepare_startup_playback_urb().

Fixed in CVS.
I've uploaded two patches against the latest ALSA and the latest kernel.

alsa-git-2005-11-07.patch that was posted to LKML on 11/07/05:
subject: [ALSA UPDATE] 1.0.10rc3
message-id:
<Pine.LNX.4.61.0511071457480.8818@tm8103.perex-int.cz>
I'm running debian unstable on a Toshiba laptop.

bryanr,
Applying your patch against 2.6.15-ck1 fixed the problem. I noticed no
adverse side effects and now sound works :)
thanks to everyone for the help.

Effects Edirol UA-5 as well. Can be temporarily repaired
by applying alsa-usbaudio-2.6.15-revert-001.patch to
kernel.org 2.6.15 (reverts all of alsa-git-2005-11-07-usbaudio.patch
except for its vmalloc/vfree changes, which are needed in 2.6.15).
I am currently narrowing down which specific chunk(s) within that
patch are responsible.

Live 24-bit external. I'm using the SPDIF output to run sound through a
home theater system. I'm running debian unstable on a Toshiba laptop.

Just wanted to let you know, I've got the same problem here with my
Terratec Phase 26 USB (since kernel release 2.6.15-rc1, now running
2.6.14.4 and ALSA 1.0.10rc1 without problems): Everything loads up fine
but no sound is played, not even at the card's own headphone connector (so
it's not a problem with SPDIF).
But there is some other yet similar problem, I've recognized earlier,
perhaps connected to this one: Sometimes (perhaps once in 2 weeks, happens
quite randomly) everything would load up fine, but the card would not give
any sound (as above). When this happens I have to plug the card's USB
cable and reconnect (just resetting volume level and mute doesn't work,
I've not been able to check whether reloading the driver as kernel module
would help).
Unfortunately, I've not been able to reproduce the latter problem as it
seems to be happening without any clue as to what may have caused it, plus
it only occurs very seldomly, about every 30th or 40th reboot.

Effects Edirol UA-5 as well. Can be temporarily repaired
by applying alsa-usbaudio-2.6.15-revert-001.patch to
kernel.org 2.6.15 (reverts all of alsa-git-2005-11-07-usbaudio.patch
except for its vmalloc/vfree changes, which are needed in 2.6.15).
I am currently narrowing down which specific chunk(s) within that
patch are responsible.

Applying this alsa update to 2.6.14 also renders the card silent. The
card
is visible in /proc/asound/cards, alsamixer sees it and I can adjust the
volume, but I get no sound from xmms, mplayer, etc. I tried enabling alsa

Summary: No sound from Soundblaster Live USB since updating
kernel drivers to 1.0.10.rc3
Description:
Every kernel since 2.6.14 (I have tried rc1, mm1, mm2, and rc2) has left
my external USB sound card broken. It appears to be something in the
alsa-git-2005-11-07.patch that was posted to LKML on 11/07/05:
subject: [ALSA UPDATE] 1.0.10rc3
message-id:
<Pine.LNX.4.61.0511071457480.8818@tm8103.perex-int.cz>

OK it seems pretty clear that the attached ~300 line patch extracted from
alsa-git-2005-11-07 contains the change that broke it. Does this help?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
smithbone - 12-31-05 05:31

Is the patch a fix or just for reference? If I reverse the patch then I
get unresolved symbols. This was against 2.6.15-rc7

Understood. I will do what I can on my end. Not much of a kernel hacker
but I can feel my way around. Who knows maybe I will get lucky :)

I will keep that in mind next time, thanks. btw, I wonder if the problem
might be SPDIF related. I have not dragged home a pair of speakers and
hooked them directly to the card, but I will. Perhaps that would help
identify the source of the issue.

Summary: No sound from Soundblaster Live USB since updating
kernel drivers to 1.0.10.rc3
Description:
Every kernel since 2.6.14 (I have tried rc1, mm1, mm2, and rc2) has left
my external USB sound card broken. It appears to be something in the
alsa-git-2005-11-07.patch that was posted to LKML on 11/07/05:
subject: [ALSA UPDATE] 1.0.10rc3
message-id:
<Pine.LNX.4.61.0511071457480.8818@tm8103.perex-int.cz>
I'm running debian unstable on a Toshiba laptop.

rlrevell,
Thanks for the feedback. I will spend some time on it this weekend and
see if I can narrow down the location of the problem. Sorry for the
negative remarks ( having a bad day). I guess after more than a month with
the only comment being "probably already fixed" I felt as though nobody
either believed this was real or cared.
Thanks again,
Jason

Yeah there are a LOT of bugs in the tracker and we don't have the manpower
to handle them all promptly sometimes.
FYI you should have given this BLOCK severity rather than MAJOR as you
have no sound at all and it's a definite regression.

OK so it broke between 1.0.10-rc2 and 1.0.10-rc3. Please use ALSA CVS to
do a binary search ("cvs update -D 2005-11-01 -A", "cvs update -D
2005-12-01 -A" etc) to identify the patch that broke it.

If anyone is interested I built the latest ALSA CVS against
2.6.15-rc7-ck1:
jason@jackass ~$ uname -a
Linux jackass 2.6.15-rc7-ck1 #20 SMP PREEMPT Wed Dec 28 12:05:42 CST 2005
i686 GNU/Linux
jason@jackass ~$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.11rc1.
Compiled on Dec 28 2005 for kernel 2.6.15-rc7-ck1 (SMP).
The USB sound card still does not work :(
Exact same results as the initial bug report.
I guess if I want to stay with current kernels I will have to revert alsa
to < 1.0.10 if I want USB sound to work :(

Um, no, you'll just have to wait for this bug to be fixed.

Upgrading to 2.6.15-rc5-git1 and debian ALSA 1.0.10 packages the card is
silent. No errors, everything looks good, /proc/interrupts is cranking
away but just silence on the output.
Previously debian ALSA 1.0.9a and 2.6.14 (Alsa 1.0.10rc1) worked.
Note that this device dosen't have a mixer so I dont think I've set it

Issue ID: 1585
Category: USB - usb-audio
Reproducibility: always
Severity: major
Priority: normal
Status: assigned
Distribution: Debian
Kernel Version: > 2.6.14 (rc1, mm1, mm2, rc2)

Summary: No sound from Soundblaster Live USB since updating
kernel drivers to 1.0.10.rc3
Description:
Every kernel since 2.6.14 (I have tried rc1, mm1, mm2, and rc2) has left
my external USB sound card broken. It appears to be something in the
alsa-git-2005-11-07.patch that was posted to LKML on 11/07/05:
subject: [ALSA UPDATE] 1.0.10rc3
message-id:
<Pine.LNX.4.61.0511071457480.8818@tm8103.perex-int.cz>

This is probably a bug that has been fixed in ALSA 1.0.10 and since
2.6.15rc1.
(rc1 and rc2 came before the release)

Clemens,
Just tried 2.6.15-rc5-mm1, same result. Card shows up, volume levels are
set, no sound.
