select DRM_PANEL_BRIDGE for this API to be available.
Also there is an issue of lifetimes. The bridge will be destroyed only
when MIPI driver is unbound, however the panel can be attached and
detached several times.

What happens if the MIPI driver is unbound. The DRM device is still
registered at this point and doesn't have a way to know that MIPI and
the panel were pulled away. I'd suggest switching to the component
framework here, so that unbinding of either of drivers also destroys the
DRM device.

Do you need the id? You can use drm_plane instead of subclassing it.

Can you expand on that one a bit more? AFAIK, it's always been unsafe
and we don't have a good mitigation at the moment, so it's unclear to me
what change you want here.

I seem to be unable to find any documentation or a mailing list post
to this effect. If you are referring to this patchset:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-samsung-soc/patch/20200313201744.19773-3-sam@ravnborg.org/
according to my understanding, it has not been applied.
In this case, the simple encoder api provides all functionality i need,
and a replacement would just be a simple encoder, except copied and pasted
into this driver.

Not sure i follow, as this call disables generation of vblank interrupts,
shouldn't it be done before all drm structures are torn down, to prevent
the interrupt handler from potentially operating on objects that are in
an invalid state?

I was thinking about using drmm_ here, as the DRM device is also created
and destroyed each time. But I might be mistaken here.

a drmm_encoder_(alloc|init)'d encoder with a NULL funcs pointer is
strictly equivalent and doesn't require any extra infrastructure or work
on your side compared to what you have here.

Your adp_crtc_atomic_disable() function calls drm_crtc_vblank_off()
already. drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() will call the CRTC disable hook if
relevant, so you're effectively disabling vblank twice here.

Please do not use drm_simple_encoder_init(). It was a bad idea and is
deprecated. Open coding it in your driver should resolve the problem.

Not sure i understand. The drm device is created in probe(), and is
destroyed by devm.
I do not see a path where it can be created/destroyed without a trip
via probe/remove,
and so tying the lifetime of the bridge in question to devm seems correct?

Not really. The reference your driver has on the drm device is given up
by devm. It will be destroyed when the last app will close its fd to the
drm device file.

And while someone has an opened fd, it can still call into the driver
through ioctls, so any KMS-facing resources need to be tied to the life
of the drm device, not its underlying device.

devm on which device? The bridge's lifecycle is tied to the mipi-dsi
host lifecycle, while the drm device is managed by the display device.
