No, it's imho too risky. Let's do it right after the release and
stabilize it for the the next (2009.05).

Don't they btw use odd/even numbers for development/stable? We should
imo move to the latest stable versions instead.
Also see the issue in the bug tracker:

I would rather not bounce gtk+ as 2.14.x and 2.15.x series have not yet
fixed directfb support, maybe we could have a choice of versions until this
is fixed.
Cheers
Dan

Or simply leave it as it is for now. Do we have any concrete reason
for upgrading the gtk version? I'm using gtk 2.12 on my Debian machine
as well. The bug tracker issue was for glib, and there's afaik no
issues with using a newer glib version with gtk 2.12 (I'm having 2.16
here).
Adding a configuration option would mean we would mean a lot more
configurations to test, so I would prefer to not to that.

I have updated libglib2 to 2.18.4 (the latest stable release) and it
works nicely. There's a patch for this attached to bug 37. In my opinion
you should do this upgrade now as more and more libraries start to
depend on glib 2.18.

I have been running gtk+ 2.12 together with glib 2.18 for several months
on my desktop machine. glib 2.18 is fully backward compatible with
earlier glib 2.x releases and afaik there are no known
incompatibilities. As I am also following the gtk-devel list, I would
probably know if there were any.

Ok, I'll apply the patch once 2009.02 is released (3 weeks).
