The IW610 module is also available with a USB host interface, while the
current package only supports its SDIO firmware.
Bump the firmware release to lf-6.18.20_2.0.0, which
provides the FwImage_IW610_USB firmware, and add a dedicated
BR2_PACKAGE_NXP_BT_WIFI_FIRMWARE_IW610_USB option.
The new release also moves firmware files out of the nxp/ directory
and no longer provides 8801 or 8997 firmware. Update the installation
paths, make the existing IW610 option explicitly SDIO, and retain legacy
configuration handling for removed or renamed options.

Hello,
Ah, here is your PATCH 2/2 :-)

Need a Signed-off-by line, and a From: line properly formatted.
But I'm concerned about firmware files having disappeared
entirely. What do we propose to the people who do have 8801 or 8997
devices? I mean NXP might decide they don't care about those people,
but those people might still have HW in the field that uses those
devices. Should we still support the old NXP firmware release to
provide an option to those people? Or are those firmware files dropped
because 8801 and 8897 were never sold on the market?
Best regards,
Thomas

I added the Signed-off line correctly and resent the patch. It should be
correct now.

I must admit that I'm not sure why those files have been removed. The
main concern I had was to support the USB host interface that I needed.
You are right that it would be nice to have an option for people still
using the old NXP firmware. Do you think adding a "version" parameter
to allow to overwrite the default version would be the correct approach ?
I will also check for the reason for which they removed support for
those devices. If they were never sold, it does not make sense to try to
continue support for those.

I would put a free form version parameter, but a choice...endchoice in
Config.in to give the choice between old version and new version.

Indeed! Do you have a relevant contact at NXP to ask this (fairly
specific) question?

I suppose you meant "I wouldn't put a free form version parameter" ?
Depending on the response from NXP community, I will do it.

I don't have a direct contact with NXP. I opened a ticket on their
platform and I am waiting for a response:

I don't have a direct contact with NXP. I opened a ticket on their
platform and got a response :

However I am not sure about what I should do to take it into account in
buildroot. They created a custom "hotfix" branch for the specific
feature of the w8997 but told me that the master branch will not receive
further support for this device. So that means that we need to make sure
that a user may select an older version of the imx-firmware and mwifiex
when support for those devices is required ? Any hint to help me
understand what I should do here would be appreciated.

The previous version fails to build with Linux 6.13 and newer because
mlinux/moal_main.h includes the removed net/lib80211.h header.
The header was removed by Linux commit 02f220b52670 ("wifi:
ipw2x00/lib80211: move remaining lib80211 into libipw").
The new NXP release skips this obsolete header for kernels newer
than 6.12.12 and includes the corresponding Linux 6.13 cfg80211 API
compatibility fixes.
