Hi,

Would Linux kernel 4.9 be supported by the CIP project as a next SLTS
version?
Because 4.9.337 is the latest released version
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/Y7lbu6%2F0P7Q%2FP3oj@kroah.com/T/ and now it
became EOL.
If yes, would it be possible to upgrade the wiki page
https://wiki.linuxfoundation.org/civilinfrastructureplatform/start ?

There are no plans to do that.

4.4 and 4.19 will be supported for a while by CIP project.

If you have time I'd be interested to hear more about your use case for continuing to use v4.9.

Just to expand upon this a bit...
The only real restriction on the number of SLTS kernels that CIP manages is resources.
The project's resources come from it's member companies.
The more companies that join, the more SLTS kernels we'd be able to support :D

I'm not saying that CIP would start supporting v4.9 specifically with more members,
but if CIP had lots of resources it would certainly make it easier to convert every LTS kernel into a SLTS kernel in future.

And 5.10 :)
Essentially every-other LTS kernel since v4.4.

Hello Chris,

Thanks for the clarification. I understand that maintaining a lot of old LTS Linux kernels requires huge resources. At the moment, we don't have enough expertise to be a kernel maintainer.
Just wondering, maybe you need help with Python, Go, or CI/CD in the CIP project?

We are checking if it's possible to use one of the Simcom communication modules, but only Linux 4.9 is supported for now. From a security point of view, it's not good to use or rely on components that are not maintained.
