Because HTTP support in git-fetch chooses not to trust the
directory index the HTTP server may spit out, and relies solely
on having info/refs file available there for discovering refs.
It is debatable if HTTP support in git-fetch should fall back on
discovery using "wget -r" like Cogito does, when the info/refs
file is not found. I've written about this once on this list --
I demonstrated what you would see if you do "wget -r" against
git.git/refs/ on kernel.org; you will see why I do not think it
is necessarily a better approach.
Not doing refs discovery using directory index forces the owner
of an HTTP reachable repository to create info/refs by running
update-server-info. This is a good thing -- it trains him to
behave.
update-server-info does not just create info/refs. It also
creates another file objects/info/packs, which is needed for
fetching over a commit walker if the repository is packed.
AFAIK, even if you are using Cogito, you would not succeed
pulling from a repository that is packed and does not have this
file.
There was a discussion about helping Cogito's tag-tracking. The
downloading side needs to know if any new tag available on the
other side refers to a commit on the branches the downloader
tracks, without pulling everything that tag object refers to
first. One way to help achieving this has been offered, which
would involve adding a bit more information to info/refs, to say
what object each tag refers to. It could be done on the client
side, but it is far simpler if this kind of help is given on the
server side.
I anticipate in the future we may need to have more auxiliary
files, or to add more information to existing auxiliary files,
that summarize what the repository has for downloaders, and
code to do so would be added to update-server-info, so the
repository owner needs to learn to run only one command.

One request, not just to Jonas. Please do not use '^---$' to
separate the introductory discussion and the real commit log
message.
Linus style (recently the kernel list had a thread on this as
well) is to have the commit log upfront with signoff, three-dash
line, optional discussion and diffstat, and then diff.
I do not mind seeing discussion upfront personally [*1*], but
the thing is the tool treats everything after the first '^---$'
something to be fed to patch, and does not treat it as the
commit log message.

Yes, definitely. That's why the Cygwin rename code (and unlink code for
that matter) is so headache-inducing.
FWIW, I just looked at the source and, AFAICT, if rename() is setting
EPERM on Windows NT/2000/XP, it should be the result of a failing
MoveFileEx (old, new, MOVEFILE_REPLACE_EXISTING).

or MoveFileEx. It tries hard to guarantee POSIX semantics within the

they broke the POSIX rename() since MoveFile() fails if destination
already exists. They should have used MoveFileEx(MOVEFILE_REPLACE_EXISTING)
instead, to guarantee POSIX semantics. The symptoms you're experiencing
make me think this might be the case (even if it is strange, since other
Unix software would fail the same way).

Hi !
When bumping the Gentoo package to cogito-0.15 I came accross a
problem while making the documentation. cg-tree-id, cg-parent-id and
cg-commit-id didn't have an USAGE variable because they don't use it;
however this breaks the documentation generation.
This trivial patch fixes it.

I'm sorry that I missed this thread. I'm usually pretty alert to the word
"cygwin" showing up in a subject.
I'll go back and read the archives to catch up but, at the risk of
making an observation that has already been made, under windows you
can't always rename a file that is open. Is that what's happening here?

Hi,
Any reason why "git clone" barfs, but cg-clone works without
a problem?
The message I get is this:
Cannot get remote repository information.

Hello,
I noticed that index.lock is one time removed by git-update-index
and the other time not (I am still trying to make the rename behave on
my cygwin installation). The atexit callback removes .lock file uncoditionally,
whether it was opened by the current process or not.
I fixed this with the attached (sorry, it's windows+firefox+gmail) patch.
The patch sets up atexit only if the file was opened successfully.

Correct.
What I usually do is to just ignore the split patches, and go back to the
mbox. Delete the ones that applied, and look at the one that didn't. Then
I try to apply that one manually - sometimes I actually do a quick manual
branch to a known version, apply and merge - and I think I might try to
use the "base wiggle" patch for that. Although I would actually prefer to
be able to try against a specific named release (not "all named tags"
first).
Quite often, the reason it doesn't apply is that I already have that patch
through a git merge (or because I applied that patch earlier through
another person), in which case I don't even try to merge it, I just delete
that email too, and just do "git-applymbox" again.

That could have its cause in your .git/HEAD being no symlink. That happens
when rsync´ing the .git directory.
The other errors could also stem from the fact that quite a few places
expect HEAD to be a symlink.

Even simpler is to use transconnect, which transparently uses the proxy by
intercepting the connect method using LD_PRELOAD.

and I cannot rebuild the index file with git-reset. First time I run it
it creates the index.lock file and errors out when writing. The second

It's on Win2k, there was multiple cygwin installations in path, the other one
supposedly is 1.5.5 (it's from QNX Momentics installation).
I had that old "cygwin1.dll" renamed into "cygwin1.dll-disabled" long
ago, though...
I can't reproduce this out of GIT context, and the error is not
reproducable after
I removed the other cygwin installation out of PATH.
Anyway, sorry, I should have tried this before posting.

Detecting if the user passed --no-cvs-direct and don't force the mode.
It allows us to support all the protocol that the standard cvs client
supports at the snail speed you should expect.
This only affects the rlog reading stage.

My understanding of your workflow, from reading your earlier
posts to the git list, is:
* Read bunch of mails -- mostly concentrating on the
description in the log message and skimming the code -- while
saving the worthy patches into a 'to-apply' mbox.
* Review 'to-aplly' mbox again, perhaps excluding not-so-good
ones. When you need to fix log messages, that is done in
this step.
* Run git-applymbox on the surviving messages in a batch mode,
processing 175 patches in one go.
What is your workflow after seeing that the 47th patch among 175
patches fails to apply? I understand you run git-applymbox
without -q, so it immediately fails and exits there. You would
have split mails, numbered from 0001 to 0175 in the .dotest
directory, with msg, patch and info files from the mail 0047
left behind.
I presume that, if the conflict/fuzz is manageably small, you
would hand edit the file 0047 to make the diff part to apply
cleanly, and then run 'git-applymbox -c .dotest/0047'. I
would understand you would be able to resume and process the
rest 128 patches this way.
Once you mentioned that if the conflict is too great you would
apply the patch to an old version that the patch sender based
her work on, and merge using git (this was the direct
inspiration of the change to git-applypatch).
What I am wondering is how that step fits in your workflow. Do
you do this by the following sequence?
* Temporarily switch to a new throwaway branch for merge from
the known old version with 'git checkout -b test v2.6.12';
* 'git apply --index <.dotest/patch' to apply the patch, and
perhaps 'git commit -F .dotest/msg';
* Switch back to the master branch with 'git checkout master';
* Merge them with 'git resolve master test <some message>',
which may leave conflicts, in which case you would hand
resolve, and say 'git commit -F .dotest/msg'. Then 'git
branch -d test' to get rid of the throwaway branch.
* Resume the patch application with 'git-applymbox -c
.dotest/0048'.
Well, I just noticed that it is not even immediately obvious
that the 47th of the 175 patches failed to apply from the
git-applymbox batch output (it shows how I do not process really
many patches myself X-<). Is there anything I can do to improve
this? For example, after git-applypatch exits with 0 exit
status we could remove the split mail file, like this:

Or it may not matter at all if your "after failure" workflow is
very different from what I've been imagining. This is the
primarily reason why I would like to understand your workflow
better.
