The function was implemented as a 32-bit hashing function. Commit
85f4c1005150 ("lib/igt_fb: Ignore the X component when computing CRC")
broke this behavior by hashing 8-bit portions. Restore the 32-bit hasing
behavior while still ignoring the X compoment.

Allow 10 bits (DRM_FORMAT_XRGB2101010) components to be hashed
as well.

Allow kms_writeback to run with DRM_FORMAT_XRGB8888 if supported
or to try DRM_FORMAT_XRGB2101010 if DRM_FORMAT_XRGB8888 is not
available.

XRGB8888 is always supposed to be available, if it's not, it's a driver
issue. Which means that XRGB2101010 will never actually be tested.
I think we should make a proper test for that format, instead of a
(silent) fallback?

It is up to a device driver to support specific format(s), not necessary
an issue. At least for now amdgpu won't support XRGB8888 but XRGB2101010.

Not sure what's the proper test or the fallback you are referring to.
The intention here is to test XRGB2101010 when possible without breaking
the original behaviours for XRGB8888.
Changing kms_writeback to tests multiple formats requires significant
modifications and tests which requires a driver capable of multiple
formats in the first place. Once we or anyone have such supports we can
come back to rework kms_writeback.

I guess it's unrelated to that patch in particular, but it's not ok from
a KMS standpoint. It was poorly documented before, but see
https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/latest/source/drivers/gpu/drm/drm_fb_helper.c#L430

Right, but you're not even testing that XRGB2101010 is actually there,
so if amdgpu format listing was somehow broken and you were to expose
XRGB8888 instead of XRGB2101010, you wouldn't notice. That's not great.

That's fine, amdgpu will be that driver.

Our HW writeback can't do 8888. This would be a silly reason to not be
able to use it for testing purposes.
I don't even understand what "SW Color Conversion" means here. Is it
expected that drivers use CPU code in kernel to walk the buffer and
"color convert" from XRGB8888 to whatever the HW supports (and the
inverse for the writeback buffer)? That seems a bit ridiculous.

We are not supporting any userspace applications other than testing. I
also don't read this as "you MUST do color conversion to 8888" but as
"color conversion to 8888 is one of two cases you are allowed to do".

Only XRGB2101010 is supported.

The purpose of this patch is to improve kms_writeback coverage:
- check XRGB8888, and test if supported or skip otherwise
to
- no XRGB8888? also check XRGB2101010, and test if supported or skip
otherwise
For amdgpu, no writeback -> support XRGB2101010 in writeback.
XRGB2101010 will be used for testing. XRGB8888 may or may not be added
later depending on whether there will be consumers of the feature but
that is out of scope of this IGT patch.

Ah, right, sorry for the brainfart.

That's exactly what that means. We have a bunch of helpers to do that
already, used for example by simpledrm if it's backed by a different
format. See:
https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/latest/source/drivers/gpu/drm/drm_format_helper.c#L914

My point is the fallback doesn't provide anything, and is harmful to
some extent. So far, we have some hardware that support XRGB8888 only,
and some that support XRGB2101010 only.
There's no point in falling back from one to the other, and if we ever
have hardware that would support both it prevents from checking both.
And sure, we could address it then, or we could address it now. It's
just adding an extra parameter to a couple of functions and a few new
subtests, it's not like we need to rewrite the whole thing.

I tend to agree. My preference would be to have a subtest for each
supported format, i.e. a -xrgb8888 and an -xrgb2101010 test.
I think there was some concern about not changing existing test
names. In that case we can keep the original test names for the
-xrgb8888 tests and append the format to the new tests.

Huh, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for pointing that out.
In our case the driver supports XRGB8888 on a plane's framebuffer. The only
limitation is on the writeback connector's fb. But I guess the way the kernel
doc talks about this it would apply to either.
What do you think would the right approach? Implement a
drm_fb_xrgb2101010_to_xrgb8888 variant in drm_fb_blit and call that on
the output buffer?
I got to say I'm not at all a fan of forcing compatibility with XRGB8888 if
this means a CPU blit. I feel this is misleading DRM clients, giving them
the impression XRGB8888 is supported by HW even though it requires a (terribly
slow and costly) CPU blit.
