Lame update to the docs is attached.  I suppose you really don't want 
patches attached, but how can I do it in the message body without 
thunderbird screwing up the formatting?

I'm not sure about thunderbird, but I'd say use a different mailer -
and ask around ;) But don't worry, finding the right way to do it is
somewhat involved for those who like graphical mailers ;)

As for the patch, I would add: git address for the tree and mailing list

Have a look at the following thunderbird extension:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2351

It gives you an option to disable word-wrap in emails. Just make sure 
you write plaintext mails and then you can just copy in the contens of 
your patch
