This series adds a uevent so userspace can find out when an Intel PMT
crashlog is available without polling. It also fixes two regressions
from the v7.1 vsec rework that prevent the crashlog path from being
used at all.

Patches 1 and 2 are fixes, tagged for stable:

 - Patch 1 fixes a NULL pointer dereference on any read of a crashlog
   sysfs data file. Commit 353042d54d82 ("platform/x86/intel/vsec:
   Switch exported helpers from pci_dev to device") started using
   entry->ep->dev, but only telemetry entries allocate an endpoint.

 - Patch 2 fixes an inverted return value test of
   intel_vsec_walk_header() in intel_vsec_get_features(). On devices
   without DVSEC/VSEC capabilities that describe their features through
   device_data, probe fails with -ENODEV and the auxiliary devices it
   created are torn down again.

Patch 3 is the new feature. It emits a KOBJ_CHANGE uevent on the
crashlog<x> device when a completed crashlog is found at probe, or when
a manually triggered capture completes. The event carries
INTEL_PMT_CRASHLOG_EVENT=PRESENT and INTEL_PMT_CRASHLOG_COMPLETE=1, and
the ABI documentation is updated to match.

The fixes are sent together with the feature because patch 3 cannot be
tested without them. Crashlog data cannot be read without patch 1.
Upcoming hardware with crashlog support has no DVSEC/VSEC capabilities
and describes its features through device_data, so it hits the bug
fixed by patch 2. Patches 1 and 2 do not depend on patch 3 and can be
applied to the fixes branch on their own if preferred.

Testing: the series was tested in an emulated (QEMU) environment,
covering both the probe-time uevent with a completed crashlog present
and the uevent after a manual trigger completes. Hardware with this
crashlog support is available, but testing on it is still pending.

Commit 353042d54d82 ("platform/x86/intel/vsec: Switch exported helpers from
pci_dev to device") changed intel_pmt_read() to pass entry->ep->dev to
pmt_telem_read_mmio() in place of entry->pcidev. entry->ep is only
allocated by the telemetry namespace's pmt_add_endpoint() hook. Crashlog
entries never get one, so any read() of a crashlog sysfs data file
dereferences a NULL pointer.

Use the intel_vsec_device parent device instead. The PMT class device is a
child of the auxiliary device, so derive it the same way
intel_pmt_attr_visible() does. This is the same device telemetry stored in
ep->dev, so behavior for telemetry and any read_telem() callback is
unchanged.

intel_vsec_walk_header() used to return a bool that was true when devices
were found. It was converted to return 0 on success and a negative errno
on failure, but the boolean test in intel_vsec_get_features() was left
unchanged, so its meaning is now inverted.

A successful walk returns 0 and leaves found set to false, while a failed
walk returns an error that evaluates to true. When no other capabilities
are present, intel_vsec_pci_init() then returns -ENODEV even though the
auxiliary devices were created, and the driver core tears them back down.

This affects platforms that have no DVSEC or VSEC capabilities and
describe their features through device_data instead, which today means
DG1. Test the return value for success explicitly.

A crashlog may already be complete when the driver binds, or it may
complete asynchronously after userspace requests a manual trigger.
Userspace otherwise has to poll to discover that data is ready.

Emit a KOBJ_CHANGE uevent on the per-instance crashlog device when a
completed log is found at probe. After a manual trigger, poll the
completion bit at 100 ms intervals for up to 5 seconds and emit the same
event when capture completes. The event carries two environment
variables:

  INTEL_PMT_CRASHLOG_EVENT=PRESENT
  INTEL_PMT_CRASHLOG_COMPLETE=1

Initialize the work items before the device's sysfs attributes are
exposed, and disable and drain them during removal.

Document the new uevent in the sysfs-class-intel_pmt ABI file.

    platform/x86/intel/pmt: Notify userspace when crashlogs complete

    A crashlog may already be complete when the driver binds, or it may
    complete asynchronously after userspace requests a manual trigger.
    Userspace otherwise has to poll to discover that data is ready.

    Emit a KOBJ_CHANGE uevent on the per-instance crashlog device when a
    completed log is found at probe. After a manual trigger, poll the
    completion bit at 100 ms intervals for up to 5 seconds and emit the same

      INTEL_PMT_CRASHLOG_COMPLETE=1

    Initialize the work items before the device's sysfs attributes are
    exposed, and disable and drain them during removal.

    Document the new uevent in the sysfs-class-intel_pmt ABI file.

Author: David E. Box <david.e.box@linux.intel.com>

    platform/x86/intel/pmt: Notify userspace when crashlogs complete

    A crashlog may already be complete when the driver binds, or it may
    complete asynchronously after userspace requests a manual trigger.
    Userspace otherwise has to poll to discover that data is ready.

[Severity: High]
Can this dereference a dangling pointer in the event of a probe failure?

If intel_pmt_dev_register() in class.c fails late (e.g. devm_ioremap_resource()
failure) after exposing sysfs attributes, the error path unregisters and frees
the device, leaving entry->kobj as a dangling pointer.

If a concurrent user writes to the 'trigger' sysfs file during this window,
trigger_store() queues uevent_poll_work for 100ms later.

If the thread running pmt_crashlog_probe() is delayed before calling
cancel_delayed_work_sync(), the timer fires and the work executes, queuing
uevent_work. The uevent_work then executes kobject_uevent_env() on
crashlog->entry.kobj, which points to the freed device.

[Severity: High]
Does this cancellation happen too late?

Because the cancellation happens after the underlying device may have already
been destroyed by the error path of intel_pmt_dev_create(), it leaves a race
window where the work queue can use the freed device.

Hi Ilpo, David,

My patch:

[PATCH v11 01/20] platform/x86/intel/pmt: complete pcidev to device update

Fixes this issue in a slightly different way... (uses entry->dev rather than entry->pcidev).

David,

In my patch I have also updated the intel_pmt_get_features() function to use the
entry->dev value (rather than entry->ep->dev).

I think the ep->dev is for Telemetry access, and "features" is a general usage?

Should the _get_features stay entry->ep->dev? or is entry->dev "more correct"?

Thanks

Mike

This looks good to me. The polling loop on the manual trigger is a very nice to have.

Note: my patch set for CRI support changes most of the predicate functions to return 0 on success
and the state in a parameter...

Not sure on how this should be handled?

Otherwise:
