There were some last-minute fixes related to i915 added to the Linus' tree
after 2.6.37-rc8. Perhaps you can give them a try?

if this is in any way related to various systems booting to a black
screen (as i described earlier), i built an absolutely up-to-date
kernel from the latest tree and that didn't solve the problem. i'm
open to testing suggestions.

Nope... machine is booting fine, screen is Ok, and in fact the machine
seems to be working perfectly... The only point is that I never saw these
in any kernel prior to 2.6.37-rc1, and them being labelled as "ERROR" made
me write a report.

Anyway, if some can tell me how to get this linus'tree, I'm ready to give
it a try Sunday afternoon.

Best,
Paul

OK, currently running :
[root@tux ~]# uname -a
Linux tux.DEF.witbe.net 2.6.37-rc8-00014-g3643e0e #1 SMP Sun Jan 2 16:25:04 CET 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and I've seen that too :
Jan 3 08:27:30 tux kernel: [drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer
Jan 3 08:27:30 tux kernel: [drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer

Jan 3 08:27:30 tux kernel: [drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer

So, two possibilities :
 - 2.6.37-rc8-00014-g3643e0e is not what you wanted me to test,
 - the problem's still there.

Best,
Paul

hmm, I've occasionally been expericancing what sounds like a similar
issue.

the screen locks, it doesn't respond to the keyboard (but caps lock still
works), frequently the mouse pointer still moves, but you can't click on
anything.

it ususally happens to me a few min after starting firefox (with 10-15
windows holding a couple hundred tabs), so it could also be a firefox bug
if it can capture the input and not release it.

I've experianced this on my T61 laptop, and my work machine (Radeon X1300
series)

I'm currently running ubuntu 10.10 which is 2.6.35-25, so if it is the
same problem, it wasn't introduced between 2.6.36 and 2.6.37.

like the OP of the bug report, this is not something that happens
frequently, but I don't do much that stresses the video, so starting all
these tabs is about as hard as I drive it.

Please still list it.

I intend to test this against 2.6.38-rc5 once it is out. It didn't happen
with 2.6.36 which I used for several weeks now, so its pretty safe to say
that its a regression of 2.6.37.

Thanks,

There have been several recent reports of lockups, with nothing in the logs or
nothing recoverable. I've seen some of these running the git3 kernel on a VM
(Fedora 14) so it may not be related to the specific video card but to X in general.

I've had too little information to justify a proper bug report.

I think you can remove this one from the regression list. I've received an
update from Florian that said !

--- Comment #27 from Florian Mickler <florian-sVu6HhrpSfRAfugRpC6u6w@public.gmane.org> 2011-02-20 10:52:15 ---
According to #22652 "*ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer" warns about
a userspace error.

It links to ticket #22652 in which Chris Wilson indicates this is warning
about userspace bug, and that this issue is tracked in :
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31419

So, this definitely looks like the problem is not in the kernel (though my
personal view on this is that the message itself should be made much more
clear and reflect that the problem is not in the kernel, but in userspace).

Thanks for the tracking you've made,
Paul

Ok, I'm closing this bug.

If the error messages go away if you update your userspace (maybe
someone can advise if your versions are 'old', I currently have no
overview of whats current), and you still experience problems (like
those Xserver crashes or freezes), then we should reopen the bug
though.

Regards,
Flo
