Hi,
I've been out of the loop for a while so I may be
repeating an earlier mailing but potentially great
news:
Open Watcom (http://www.openwatcom.org/) has released
the source code for the original 16 bit C compiler and
tools!!
It should be possible to modify this to actually run
under ELKS so one should be able to do ones
development in situ and bring ELKS to 'stand alone
level'.
I've got my first child due soon but if anyones
intereseted in getting together and porting this over
I'd be glad to get involved.
Tom

About opensourced Watcom compiler -
it is rather unclear if the compiler exists in a 16-bit incarnation:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
System Requirements
# IBM PC compatible running DOS v5.0 or later, Windows 3.x, Windows 95,
Windows NT, OS/2
# 80386 or higher processor with 8 Mb RAM; 16 Mb for Windows NT
# CD-ROM drive
# Minimum 2.2 MB of hard drive space to run from CD-ROM; or 150 MB for
typical hard disk installation (disk space requirement varies with disk
cluster size and installation options)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was under impression that bcc could be tuned to fit into 64k, is it
wrong?
Best regards,

Ivan

I'm fairly certain that there was a 16 bit version -
but as you say its a bit hard to work out whats in
there - I have not been able to penetrate the
documentation to any degree.
Unfortunately I have a full time job and my first
child due next week so I'm not sure I can devote the
time to investigate much further but if there is a
16bit IDE/Debug suite in there that would be very
nice.
I was expecting broadband to be installed at home so I
cancelled my ISP and now I have to browse at work
until they can dig up 50cm of tarmac to fit the
broadband and work isnt too keen..
bcc in 64k - do you mean 640k? Again penetrating
documentation....

I have found an archive of what seems to be StarNet's X11 server for DOS:
http://www.orgchm.bas.bg/pub/xwindows/starnet/
xlite should be the 286 version.
Do not start more that a few xterms, memory is limited!
Enjoy,
