I just found the complete set of binaries in the images-xx.zip, seems like EDE
does not contain all of them.

Thanks to the help of a kind reader I managed to set up a user account. A new
problem arose nevertheless, when trying to set a password, I get an error
message:
Error creating temporary password file

Having found the man pages on the full3-image, I copied those to my HD also.
When trying to read a (any) manpage, I always get the error:
Bad -c option

Some of the other commands give "funny" replies, too.

Maybe someone can can give a helping hand? :-)

Thanks for taking the time to read,
Michael

Neil,

thank you for your response.

I haven't really been missing certain binaries, I just wanted to see all there
is to play and get a feel of how far ELKS has evolved.
Now wait, what I actually have been missing was "ln". One of the first things
I did (lacking ln) was writing a small script called "free" that does nothing
but call "meminfo". I guess I don't understand why it's called "meminfo" in
the first place.
Unfortunately ln (now that I found it) doesn't work on my system, just like
some other commands.
Outside of images.zip, are there any applications available for ELKS besides
e3 (which sadly also doesn't work for me)?

That sounds like a good idea, I'm looking forward to your next version.

Thank you for the work you have done,
Michael

Hi Michael,

Sorry I have took a few days to respond to your email. Following on from
your update.

I have only included a selection of binaries in EDE. I would be interested
to know more on what binaries you are missing in case they should be in that
selection. As far as the other elkscmd binaries are concerned, I am working
on the "package install" aspect of EDE at present. I will be packing any
binaries not already included in there.

Not sure on your password problem. To be honest I haven't done much with
user addition up to now. I would need to have a play.

Your compilation issues I will leave to the c coders !

Please keep in touch. Your help is valuable to me in enhancing EDE. I very
much welcome any suggestions.

Many Thanks

Neil

Hello,

where can I get the missing binaries for the complete distribution, as found
in elkscmd and elksnet?
Compiling is probably not meant for the average user that I am. All I get is
errors, and without profound documentation I don't seem to be able to resolve
the issues.
A few more questions:
- When trying to compile, I wanted to incorporate the German keymap to
accomodate my keyboard. It seems like the keymap is compiled into the kernel,
there is probably no other way to map a German layout? If so, does anyone
have a "Germanized" kernel for me?
- Since there is no adduser command, how do I establish a user account?
- A while ago someone posted a link to e3, a small editor suitable for ELKS. I
dld it and compiled, but it doesn't seem to work. The precompiled binary also
doesn't work. Did anyone succeed, and how? I always hated vi and would
appreciate something less cryptic. (BTW the Linux version works fine on my
RH7.3 system)
- Are there plans for ethernet drivers, particularly the 3C503 (I remember
someone suggested this card a while ago)?

I have many more questions, but this should be enough for now. Thanks to
everyone who contributed to ELKS. I have been fascinated ever since I started
lurking about 3 years ago, to have sth else than DOS to run on my 286-16.

TIA,
Michael
