Maybe starting with the port some simple graphics library is easier.
What about a subset of the X primitives ? Supporting a single non-streatchable window (full screen) and fake networking shouldn't cost much memory...

I'd personally love a DDK to extend the support to other devices such as PCMCIA cards.
Plus, as already requested by someone else, generic BIOS level drivers could be helpful... what about a wrapper/shim for the old MS-DOS device drivers ?

Older versions of microwindow/nano-x worked on elks if someone has time they
could give it a test.
