Hi all,
Here's a copy of a posting I made to the Nano-X group regarding the question
from Luigi.
In principle it's possible to run VNC on Nano-x (works out of the box on
386+) however there are problems building it for Elks. The current verions
of Nano-X have bloated a bit and nolonger appear to be small enough to build
for 16bit machines....
The old version that was suggested is 0.86 which is much smaller, but has a
different api so that the Nano-X vncviewer does not build on it. May just
require simple changes.
The network issue on Elks would mean that at present only SLIP would be
usable. But there 'missing' network includes that are needed for building
vncviewer.
In summary - I still think that this is possible, it just requires a bit of
effort from someone who knows the Elks networking well.
Simon Wood.
PS. The Nano-X'ers though it a bit futile....

Hi again,
Though I ought to chase this idea up.... having suggested a solution :-)
1). Nano-Vnc works fine on '386+' machines.. this could be another way to
a single disk VNC client if anyone is bothered to bring this all together.
2). Elks networking, looks like it is only SLIP over serial at the moment.
3). Microwindows does not build for elks at present, a small number of
'improvements' have broken the build.
and now the questions....
a). Does anyone have a direct (i.e. not gpm) mouse driver for PS2? Otherwise
I'll need to find a serial mouse from somewhere.
b). Is anyone actually interested in this, or is this a futile activity?
Simon Wood.

Hi Simon,
thank you for your interest. I still not understand if it is
possible for me (without porting anything...) to run the setup you
suggested.
Can you explain more? (privately if you prefere)
Thanks
Luigi

Luigi,
The system will not work at present. Nano-x has moved on (got more
complicated) and no longer compilies for Elks. An older version could
be used, but the nano-x api has changed so the vnc-viewer application
would need to modified.
On top of this the Elks networking only works via a serial SLIP connection.
I think that, unless you are willing to spend a large amount of time on
this project, this idea is a no-go.
Simon Wood.
