While looking through this code again, I realized that we don't compare
the access mode of ret->file against the desired operation. I propose
adding a new predicate:
static inline int
fuse_iomap_validate_bdev_access(const struct fuse_backing *fb,
enum fuse_iomap_iodir dir)
{
const fmode_t fmode =
dir == WRITE_MAPPING ? FMODE_WRITE | FMODE_READ : FMODE_READ;
return (!fb || (fb->file->f_mode & fmode) == fmode) ? 0 : -EACCES;
}

Codex points out that if the fuse server configured an O_PATH file
descriptor as a "backing" device, S_IFBLK will be set in i_mode but
file->f_mapping->host will point to the special file on the filesystem
instead of an actual blockdev inode. That causes problems because
I_BDEV will then be some random pointer-looking value, not an actual
bdev.
if (file->f_mode & FMODE_PATH)
return -EBADF;
