Convers Setup

Hello all,

In an effort to get prepared for digital ARES traffic handling, I'm 
going to try running a digital net.  I'm looking to add a convers server 
to my prototype node.  So far, I've found the following pieces of software:

saupp
wampes
tpp-conversd
tnn
pp-conversd
htpp
htppu
webconvers

Has anyone run any of these convers servers before?  Have you been on 
convers chats before where you could actually tell what server software 
you were connecting to?  Were any of the above "really good"?  or 
"really bad"?

My only option so far is to work my way through them one by one until I 
find one that works well.

Hoping to shortcut this.

Also, is there a central site with general info about how convers works, 
what it is, who came up with it, etc?  That would really help.

I'm using conversd-saupp. It seems to be me newer, has irc support, and
some ax25 support too.

For ax25 user connection, you could use axconv, which hangs on ax25d,
and connects to conversd via tcp/ip.

Speaking of Converse Servers, mine came back on line
a few days ago. The TACOMA Convers Server is
available at 66.80.67.210, port 3600, for anyone
interested. I am running HTPP on a SuSE v9.0 Linux
box.

Dave,

As far as i know, the SAUPP is the one to choose.
It still has support and changes from time to time.
No real bugs are in in the software, and rockstable.

I have run htpp.  It's prone to occasional segfaults.  My users have
mostly been lightweight types, and have connected via ax.25, rather
than IP.  Other than the segfaults, I've not had problems with it.

That said, you might consider using an IRC server instead of a
convers server.  There's a fair amount of commonality; in many
user communities, there'll be more experience with IRC than convers.
IRC servers are typically far more heavily (ab)used and thus much more
resistant to abuse.  If you need to provide service to ax.25 callers,
it should be possible to use ax25d+shims to provide client service
using something like the text-mode sirc client.

conversd-saupp can accept ax25 connections by itself, but you need to
loguin with/n your_call. I've setup it listening only on port 3600 tcp,
and ax25 connections are handled by ax25d and axconv, which connects to
de conversd on tcp/ip, logs you automatically, and even can issue some
commands like a /w after connection, all automatically.

as far as I remember, Dieter Deyke DK5?? wrote the first implementation for 
WAMPES, also the first networking version. ppconvers split off and version 
3.12 was integrated into TNN (and later XNet). There was also a port for 
PC/FlexNet (on DOS). At some point, tppconvers was split off ppconvers and 
was released in conjunction with TNOS. Even later, htppconvers (?by Tomi 
Manninen OH2BNS?) was made from tppconvers. Some patches may have made it 
back into ppconvers with the release of 3.13 (kernel-AX25 support, limited 
loop detection w/ backup links etc.). All improvements of these versions were 
bundled by Thomas Osterried, DL9SAU into sauppconvers. He is actively 
maintaining it, has removed a lot of bugs (race conditions etc.) and added 
some nice extras (improved logging, easier/more flexible link setup, access 
control, IRC mode).

No, HTPP was done by Hessu OH7LZB, although I had some part in it too.
It's still available at http://he.fi/, but I guess saupp would be the
way to go nowadays (I haven't tested it).

Webconvers is not a convers server as such - it is the interface 'glue'
that allows access to an existing convers server via the web using a
browser.

The latest version is 2.1beta2 which has a channel display to simplify the
moving between channels and operating on multiple channels.

I'm looking for feedback on use and translations are still required - I
know that its being used in non-English environments but nobody has sent
me any language files :-((

Hi all,

I did some simple 'security tests' with a couple of different conversd
packages, and what I found wasn't funny. I posted [1] a note to
linux-hams, but it was so much so I did only a 'Design problem in
convers daemon" mail.
(I would not run any of these conversd packages even as UID guest)

But,
Thomas have done a great job to fix up the security with the
conversd-saupp code, so I recommend strongly all to use conversd-saupp
instead of any other package.

I saw that Thomas view-CVS site wasn't working. I have noticed him about
that.
