Hi,
I made a fresh installation of vanilla linux-2.6.6 and udev-025 on PC,
where earlier linux-2.4.25 with devfs was installed. Under /udev I find
the following devices:
mousehomenet:/home/rose(124)#ll /udev
total 8
crw------- 1 root root 14, 12 Jun 6 11:19 adsp
crw------- 1 root root 10, 175 Jun 6 11:18 agpgart
crw------- 1 root root 14, 4 Jun 6 11:19 audio
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3 Jun 6 11:17 cdrom -> hdb
crw------- 1 root root 10, 63 Jun 6 11:17 device-mapper
crw------- 1 root root 14, 9 Jun 6 11:18 dmmidi
crw------- 1 root root 14, 3 Jun 6 11:19 dsp
brw------- 1 root root 3, 64 Jun 6 11:17 hdb
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 4 10:45 input/
crw------- 1 root root 6, 0 Jun 6 11:18 lp0
crw------- 1 root root 226, 0 Jun 6 11:26 mga
crw------- 1 root root 14, 2 Jun 6 11:18 midi
crw-rw---- 1 root multimedia 14, 0 Jun 6 11:19 mixer
crw-rw---- 1 root multimedia 81, 64 Jun 6 11:18 radio0
crw------- 1 root root 21, 0 Jun 6 11:19 sg0
...
crw------- 1 root root 21, 7 Jun 6 11:19 sg7
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 6 11:18 snd/
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 188, 0 Jun 4 10:45 ttyUSB0
crw-rw---- 1 root multimedia 81, 224 Jun 6 11:18 vbi0
crw------- 1 root root 7, 1 Jun 6 11:17 vcs1
...
crw------- 1 root root 7, 8 Jun 4 11:09 vcs8
crw------- 1 root root 7, 129 Jun 6 11:17 vcsa1
...
crw------- 1 root root 7, 136 Jun 4 11:09 vcsa8
crw-rw---- 1 root multimedia 81, 0 Jun 6 11:18 video0
After the installation some programs were not running, because they did
not find their devices. E.g. gpm and X did not find /dev/mouse. So I
created manually symlinks:
mousehomenet:/home/rose(127)#ll /dev | grep udev
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root root 11 Jun 4 19:40 input ->
/udev/input/
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root multimedia 11 Jun 6 13:02 mixer ->
/udev/mixer
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18 Jun 6 11:19 mouse ->
/udev/input/mouse1
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root multimedia 12 Jun 4 20:20 radio0 ->
/udev/radio0
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9 Jun 4 11:05 snd ->
/udev/snd/
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root multimedia 10 Jun 6 12:53 vbi0 ->
/udev/vbi0
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root multimedia 12 Jun 4 20:18 video0 ->
/udev/video0
With exception of the sound of my TV-card everythings seems to work.
But I am not very satisfied with my manual creation of symbolic links.
What is the recommended procedure to make the /udev/* devices accessible
to the application programs? Should I modify my init scripts, that they
are creating links from every entry in /udev into /dev? And what about
devices that are present in /dev/ and /udev, e.g. dsp, hdb, lp0, midi,
sg0-sg7, vcs1-vcs8 and vcsa1-vcsa8? Should I delete the corresponding
entries in /dev/? Or should delete all entries in /dev? But the
essential entries: console, null, rtc, the hard disk entries hd?, hd??,
hd???, sd?, sd??, sd???, etc. are not created in /udev.
Please give me some hints.
