FWIW, we have seen EXACTLY the same hang running here on our system.
The start/end addresses for the purge cross region boundaries.
We are running a 2.4.0 kernel.

Just my observation:
The improvement I have seen using the 2.4.1-010131 kernel from any 2.4.0
ia64 kernel is major enough to upgrade.
I have not seen any lockups of the sort I have seen on this thread.
I am running a 4 proc Lion with 4 Gigs memory, Bios 71.
If you are seeing this issue on 2.4.0 I would upgrade.

Definitely seeing this (at least the problem I reported) on a
2.4.1-010131 kernel.
