Bother ... looks like generic-smp kernel is hosed. Boots ok with tiger-defconfig
(which is what I've been testing for the past couple of weeks).

Strike that ... I thought I had serial console enabled, but it wasn't.
Right after I clicked "Send" the "login:" prompt showed up.
I'm actually 4 commits past -rc5 ... the last of which does something
obscure with PCI bus resources.

I'm seeing a similar problem with ZX machines... and serial console
*is* enabled...
I used configs/zx1_defconfig

2.6.13-rc5 works for me on SN2 boxes. I could even boot an SN2 box
that was built using tiger_defconfig.

After I sorted out the console problem, it turns out that the MPT
fusion driver is no longer enabled in the ZX1_defconfig.
Should it be? What machines is configs/zx1_defconfig supposed to
cover? I thought it was for all non-NUMA HP machines with a ZX1
chipset --- zx2000, rx2600, etc.

Yes, MPT is needed by default on several zx1 systems. The zx1
machvec covers all HP boxes, zx1 & sx1000, so it would be nice if the
zx1_defconfig worked on them all. Or maybe we should have an
sx1000_defconfig as well(?) I typically use the default (generic)
defconfig, so I don't tend to notice when the zx1 file gets stale. I've
been running happily on zx1 w/ defconfig on -rc5. Thanks,

I think the MPT config options changed recently, so zx1_defconfig
is probably just a little out of date.

There's so little difference between zx1 and sx1000, I don't think
it's really worth having a separate defconfig for them. I wouldn't
mind a more inclusive name than zx1_defconfig, though. I tried
something like "HP" a while back, until somebody pointed out the
old HP i2000 (Intel 460GX-based).

The kernel I tried was a GENERIC kernel (DIG still works on Tiger). Also
tested on HP Eiger, same result: the system gets an MCA. I've attached
the config I'm using.

Using that config on my Tiger, I didn't see an MCA, but I did have an
OOPS with a stacktrace that includes:
init
uncached_init
efi_memmap_walk_uc
uncached_build_memmap
gen_pool_free ...
Sticking in a "return" at the start of efi_memmap_walk_uc() to bypass
this got me a lot further (I died while "Creating root device" ... probably
because my scripts mistakenly thought that MPT was configured in).
So it looks like your problem is CONFIG_IA64_UNCACHED_ALLOCATOR=y

It may help to know that on the tiger, efi_memmap_walk_uc decides
that this efi_memory_desc_t entry is fair game:

attribute = 0x1
So despite your protests, I think that efi_memmap_walk_uc() is
very broken. It certainly doesn't do any of the things that
it's descriptive comment says that it is going to do. It fails
to find any of the leftover pages.
Maybe when Khalid finishes with efi_gather() you could look
at saving the addresses of any discarded memory that is UC
capable in a separate array.

That will certainly stop this code from crashing on Tiger.
But it still doesn't really do what the comment claims it
will do. The "attribute" field is a bitmask ... most
of the memory that was dropped because of holes or
incompatible attributes within the same granule will also
have other allowable attributes. So final version of this
should be checking "md->attribute & EFI_MEMORY_UC" rather
than "=".
I think this will be easier to solve if Khalid takes my
example efi_gather() code into his clean up in this area.
Then we can include a "type" in kern_memdesc, and mark all
the blocks the kernel can use with one value, and all the
blocks it can't with another (so one efi_memory_desc_t may
end up creating up to three kern_memdesc structures if there
is unusable space on both the start and end of a block).
The efi_memmap_walk() will just consider the kernel usable
blocks, and efi_memmap_walk_uc() will operate on the unusable
blocks.

Ok,
I don't have all the EFI specs at hand, didn't realize it was a
bitmask. We should probably combine that with something like what Alex
Williamson was suggesting.

What about this then? I looked a bit further at treating the attribute
bit as a bitmask, however it doesn't really make sense as we can't
really use uncached memory which has the write protect bit set for
instance (I see those in the EFI mem map on the SN2). Worse is that I
have also seen regions marked both uncached and writeback which seems
pretty absurd, but to avoid getting trapped by these I think it's
safer to stick to using '='.
This patch is modelled on Alex's suggestion of using
is_available_memory().

Only grab uncached pages from the boot services data section to avoid
grabbing memory mapped IO regions by mistake. Regions which have other
attributes set besides the uncached bit are unsuitable as well
(eg. write protect etc).

The attribute field tells you which modes are *possible*. E.g. on Tiger
most blocks of memory in the EFI memory map have attribute 0xB
(WB + WC + UC) ... meaning that the chipset will support any of these
modes to use this memory. The Itanium processor won't let you mix
and match modes (unless you go through the appropriate cache and TLB
flushing ritual when switching) ... but that is an orthogonal question
to what the chipset/platform will allow you to do.
So you are moving in the right direction ... you need to check the type
to see what sort of memory a block is. Here "type" is overloaded
to report some physical properties (e.g. EFI_CONVENTIONAL_MEMORY vs.
EFI_MEMORY_MAPPED_IO) and also what the memory is being used for (e.g.
EFI_{LOADER|BOOT_SERVICES|RUNTIME_SERVICES}_{CODE|DATA} are probably
all regular RAM, but they are being used for various purposes which
means they may or may not be available for re-allocation, depending
on when that use is over.
On my Tiger there is no memory that is marked _just_ UC, but I have about
18MB in bits trimmed off because of holes or incompatible attributes
within the same granule ... all of this is UC capable.

Ok if thats the case we really have to check for equals to and not the
bit flag. We're trying to pick out spill pages that can be used for
the uncached allocator and if pages can be supported in multiple ways
we will have to pull out the full granule and convert it to uncached
if we wish to use it, which may conflict with the use the rest of the
granule is currently being used for.

EFI_CONVENTIONAL_MEMORY and EFI_MEMORY_MAPPED_IO are all part of the

include/linux/efi.h. In other words it's going to be one or the other,
not both EFI_CONVENTIONAL_MEMORY + EFI_BOOT_SERVICES_DATA for the same
block. The patch I sent you did check for the five types,
EFI_LOADER_CODE, EFI_LOADER_DATA, EFI_BOOT_SERVICES_CODE,
EFI_BOOT_SERVICES_DATA, and EFI_CONVENTIONAL_MEMORY which should be
valid for the driver if they are just UC capable and nothing else.

The kernel is only using complete granules of WB memory. So many of the
trimmed off pieces that the kernel ignores will be usable as UC even
if they happen to support other attributes too.

That's correct ... the "type" field isn't a bitmap, you only get to
choose one of the possible options. My point here is that many of
these types refer to ordinary memory that happens to have been assigned
some purpose. E.g. EFI allocates some memory for elilo.efi. This memory
would have been EFI_CONVENTIONAL_MEMORY, but now it is being used for
a specific purpose, so it gets a different type. Linux sees that and
knows that once it has copied out anything it may need (e.g. the
command line arguments) it can use that memory.

While safe, this is being overly restrictive.

But this is trying to grow up to be a generic UC allocator
for use on systems other than SN2 ... so it needs to be
smart enough to find some memory to use on those systems
as well.
