GSoC Proposal 2025

[Saalim Quadri]

Hi everyone, I am Saalim Quadri an undergrad student at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, pursuing Electronics and Communications.
I wish to participate in the GSoC 2025 as a part of the Linux Foundation, IIO Project.

I have been contributing to the Linux Kernel and have more than 10 accepted patches.
I have also worked with Android Linux Ecosystem in the past years, and have worked on several subsystems, backports and fixes.

I started looking into https://wiki.linuxfoundation.org/gsoc/2025-gsoc-iio-driver and Analog Devices Inc. and I am interested in writing
the driver for ADE9113 ADC.

In that sense, I would like to know if anyone in the IIO community could provide with some suggestions for my proposal, and a positive impact.
Any suggestion or hint is appreciated!

Well, aside from the "Tips for writing a good proposal" section in the project's
page, I would also consider Jonathan's comments on previous proposals [1].

If you are looking for a task list, see kernelnewbies IIO tasks page [2] and
some suggested changes for IIO staging drivers [3].

Regarding proposal, I wanted to ask, how to get a draft reviewed.
Shall I send it here in the same thread, or do I need to send it
somewhere else.

GSoC candidates often ask for proposal reviews on the mailing list.
However, as part of the mentoring team, I will not review draft IIO driver
project proposals to avoid favoring applications of any specific candidate.

As I'm not a mentor, I might offer feedback if time allows but only
on a public list where other candidates will be able to see the
comments and have the option to take them into account for their
own proposals.  It will probably only be broad generalities however
rather than specific details.

Thank you very much for the responses, albeit late, it took me sometime
I was studying about the working on IIO, and the proposed driver on the GSoC page [1]

This is my draft proposal: [2]
I am continuing on the same thread, as you mentioned, to keep it on the public list.
I have enabled comments, to ease up the review on your end, such that you can identify if any issue is present and point it out.

My major doubt in the proposal is regarding the timeline of the project.

I also would like to suggest, if we are able to complete our first driver before the evaluation, then we can discuss working on
a second sensor, if that is alright and if we are able to complete it within the time.

I've added a proposal template to the IIO project page. The template has a
timeline initial draft. You may check out the template and adapt/extend the
initial timeline from there.

Elaborating a good work plan is probably the hardest part of making a good
proposal and requires students to either study the provided material in the
project page or have some development experience (or both). The work schedule
doesn't need to describe everything in detail, but the more reasonable your plan
to achieve project goals is, the better it may convey you as a good candidate.

I'll review all proposals after they are submitted.

When time and energy allow, the sky is the limit. My estimation, though, is that
developing a driver for one part will be more than enough work for a GSoC.
Still, if you are excited about doing more for IIO, then sure, add that to your
proposal.

Thank you for the suggestions, I am still new to the subsystem, and am still learning about the process
of working on IIO, I will keep on updating the proposal, that I uploaded on the gsoc project page, as I
continue to learn more about it. I keep getting intrigued by the subsystem, as I keep diving more into it.
