Hi Lovekesh and Dmitry,
I have a ThinkPad T490 with the same Synaptics TM3471-020 touchpad
(LEN205B, firmware ID 3972349).
After the SMBus/RMI4 support was added, I noticed that touchpad
movement and scrolling work, but physical clicking and tapping become
extremely unreliable. A click registers only after several attempts.
My environment:
- ThinkPad T490
- Synaptics TM3471-020
- Tested on kernel 6.18.58-1-lts and 7.3.0-4-cachyos
Relevant kernel error:
rmi4_physical rmi4-00: rmi_driver_clear_irq_bits:
Failed to change enabled interrupts!
Workaround confirmed: Disabling Synaptics InterTouch resolves the
clicking and tapping issue:
sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse synaptics_intertouch=0
With this setting, the touchpad falls back to the PS/2 Synaptics path,
and clicking and tapping become reliable.
Could this indicate an issue with the SMBus/RMI4 implementation or
interrupt handling for this particular touchpad?
I would appreciate your guidance on whether this is an expected
limitation or a driver issue that needs further investigation.
Thank you.
Best Regards,
Jakariya Abbas

Could you verify again whether this bug is really there, on mainline?
Because same issue was reported a week ago but then reporter said they
were unable to reproduce it.
...For some reason I can't find their mail on lore here's the link
to thread anyways.

Hello,
Per the kernel message, reporting that the touchpad below works
correctly over SMBus/RMI4 with psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1.
Machine: Lenovo ThinkPad T490
PNP ID: LEN205b PNP0f13
Distro: Fedora 44
Kernel: 7.2.5-200.fc44.x86_64
dmesg before the change:
psmouse serio1: synaptics: Your touchpad (PNP: LEN205b PNP0f13) says
it can support a different bus. If i2c-hid and hid-rmi are not used,
you might want to try setting psmouse.synaptics_intertouch to 1 and
report this to linux-input@vger.kernel.org.
psmouse serio1: synaptics: Touchpad model: 1, fw: 10.32, id: 0x1e2a1,
caps: 0xf014a3/0x940300/0x12e800/0x500000, board id: 3471, fw id:
3972349
Results with intertouch enabled:
- Touchpad and TrackPoint both work
- Multi-finger gestures are much more reliable than under PS/2
- Both devices still work after suspend/resume
Please consider adding LEN205b to smbus_pnp_ids in
drivers/input/mouse/synaptics.c.
Thanks,
John

Lenovo ThinkPad T490 has a Synaptics Touchpad that supports SMBus/RMI4
mode, but is not listed in smbus_pnp_ids table.
Add LEN205b to smbus_pnp_ids[] passlist.
