Hi all - Heinz is unavailable, so I'm sending this out for him:
LVM 1.1-rc1 release candidate supports both version 1 and 2 of the metadata.

There's *no* need to run any metadata update tools.
Please test this release candidate and feed back results to the linux-lvm
list in order to help us to release 1.1 ASAP.
A tarball is available now at

for download (Follow the "LVM 1.1-rc1" link).
Changes to LVM 1.1-rc1 include:
o volume group quorum support is in enabling optional activation of volume
groups (vgchange -qn) in case at least one physical volume out of many is
still accessable enabling retrieval of data in logical volumes allocated
on the accessable devices
o vgimport supports importing by volume group name rather than requiring
a physical volume list
o creation of metadata backup files in /etc/lvmtab* and metadata archives in
/etc/lvmconf/ is now optional to help saving space for eg. on ram disks.
If vgscan is not run at all and /etc/lvmtab* are removed, no backup files
will be created. If vgcfgbackup is not run at all and /etc/lvmconf/ is
removed, no archive files will be created.
o locations of metadata backups and archives are configurable through
environment varibles LVM_BACKUP_INDEX/LVM_BACKUP_DIR and LVM_ARCHIVE_DIR
respectively
o volume group static mode in order to avoid all configuration changes to a
volume group once set. This is useful to 'freeze' a volume group in order
to activate it in a cluster of for fail-over configurations
o the llseek cast bug has been fixed, which caused pvmove to fail beyond the
2GB offset

thanks! this does fix the pvmove 2GB limit problem i ran into.
just a note, it seemed as if the --test feature had changed between the
two pvmove versions. that is, before with 1.0.3 i was able to run multiple
pvmove --test multiple times and it continued to work. now with 1.1rc1 i
had to run a vgscan in order to run pvmove --test again because i got this
error on the second invocation:
pvmove --test /dev/hda14
pvmove -- no logical volumes on empty source physical volume "/dev/hda14"
worked just fine after that vgscan though :>
i'm not sure if i just needed to run vgscan since i was using a new
version of the lvm tools anyway or if that --test does actually change
something (like the info in /etc/lvm....?).
at any rate, lvm is great and continues to power our mp3 player
wonderfully - thanks LVM :>

Well, probably a dependency on the metadata backups in /etc/lvmtab*

pvmove has fixed the 2GB file offset problem. YAY! it works great however
I did get it to segv ;-)
Summary, I have a 22 gig lv, on one disk which I want to move on off it,
There is enough disk space on two other pvs.
So pvmove -v -n oolon3_lv /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/part4
Should work.... in theory
However it didn't a segv was produced, I solved the problem by specifying
the LE extent ranges and PEs to move them two, a two stage op, but still,
it should not have segved.

pvscan -- reading all physical volumes (this may take a while...)
pvscan -- ACTIVE PV "/dev/ide/host2/bus1/target0/lun0/part2" of VG
"sunset_vg" [30.84 GB / 19.66 GB free]
