System is slackware 10, gcc 3.4.0
compiling device-mapper (both 1.00.18 and 1.00.19) give the following error:

What might be causing this?

Missing header files or incorrect arguments to 'configure'?
Check the instructions in the 'INSTALL' file carefully.
(e.g. Most people shouldn't specify a kernel source dir).

Yes , thanks , that was it , I gave a kernel dir as option,
now only vgdisplay -c doesn't work, but maybe it isn't an option anymore?

Works for me. (Old version perhaps?)
But 'vgs' replaces it with something extremely configurable.
