Hi,
several MM updates:
Make Zi Yan a THP maintainer (thanks for all your hard work over
the years and thanks for taking on this responsibility), and perform some
MM MAINTAINERS cleanups.
Then, start the next step of the transition from Andrew's MM tree to
separate component trees that all get integrated into the mm-next
integration tree.
Start routing shmem through mm/core.git, adding me as a maintainer
primarily to pick patches.
Then, target the following components for the mm/core.git tree that I
(co)maintain:
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - BALLOON
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - CORE
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - GUP (GET USER PAGES)
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - KSM (Kernel Samepage Merging)
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - MEMORY HOT(UN)PLUG
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - MIGRATION
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - NUMA PLACEMENT
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - RMAP (REVERSE MAPPING)
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - THP (TRANSPARENT HUGE PAGE)
More details in the last patch.
In the upcoming cycles we'll then route more of the other MM components
through different trees.
Let's see how this goes, in particular with the continuous stream of
fixes. But getting these in in a controlled way has highest priority
right now wither way.

"memmap" will be used as a prefix for branches, but not as a branch
itself. "for-next" is the integration for all these things against which
people should ideally send patches.
Not mentioning a branch makes them assume "master", which is wrong.
So just mention the right thing, which is "for-next"

I am not really the best shmem/tmpfs/memfd expert around, but it should
be good enough to judge when something is ready to be picked up, to then
pick it up. I'll have to heavily rely on Hugh and Baolin on judgment
for the more involved and more controversial bits.
Rename "TMPFS (SHMEM FILESYSTEM)" to "MEMORY MANAGEMENT - SHARED MEMORY
(SHMEM/TMPFS/MEMFD)" and move it accordingly. Add myself as a MAINTAINER
so people know whom to CC.
Add mm/core.git as the target git tree. Once shmem becomes a high volume
component we can dedicate it a separate tree and have dedicated people
pick it up.
While at it, add some more shmem/tmpfs/memfd related files+directories
we missed so far.
There is also "kernel/pid_sysctl.h", which includes some of the pid
namespaced sysctl vm.memfd_noexec. But that's really more of a proc/
namespace thingy, so it's not a good fit here.

Zi has been contributing to THP consistently and reliably over many
years and is considered one of our most valuable THP experts. As THP is
an especially active area lately, having a single dedicated THP maintainer
is not sustainable.
Fortunately, Zi volunteered to take on more responsibility by stepping
up as a THP co-maintainer. So let's do exactly that.
His placement in the MAINTAINERS entry is very convenient to perform
this change :)

We want to make sure that MM components cover all relevant MM files. The
generic "MEMORY MANAGEMENT" sections will probably go away at some
point.
We have a bunch of files that are not explicitly tracked under MM
components. Let's add these missing files.
Split up tools/mm to the appropriate components, but still add it also
under MISC, similar to what we did with selftests.
Don't split up selftests for now. They are covered by MISC and some
sections name them separately.
Some files like
- include/linux/numa.h
- include/trace/events/kmem.h
- Documentation/admin-guide/numastat.rst
are a bit fuzzy. Add them to the best fit for now.

Prefix "MEMORY HOT(UN)PLUG" with "MEMORY MANAGEMENT" and put it into the
right spot in the MM component section list.

Let's start routing more components I (co)maintain through mm/core.git.
Update the git trees by pointing them at the for-next branch:
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - BALLOON
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - CORE
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - GUP (GET USER PAGES)
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - KSM (Kernel Samepage Merging)
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - MEMORY HOT(UN)PLUG
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - MIGRATION
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - NUMA PLACEMENT
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - RMAP (REVERSE MAPPING)
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT - THP (TRANSPARENT HUGE PAGE)
Leave out MISC for now.
This change doesn't imply that all changes to these components will
immediately be routed through that tree; in particular changes that cover
other components, or severe conflicts will require coordination with
Andrew's tree.
So this marks merely the start of "mm/core.git will start picking
relevant material for these components".
Remove Andrew from these components to set the expectation that he won't be
the primary person picking stuff for these components; he is listed as
maintainer under the generic "MEMORY MANAGEMENT" and will get CCed on most
changes, and can keep an eye on stuff that falls through the cracks
(thanks!).
While at it, drop the link to http://www.linux-mm.org: it's not
particularly useful in 2026.
