i have a copy of the iso of freedos that you are supposed to burn to a CD.
is there a way to open it and copy files out?

Do you mean a CD image file? If so you can mount it using the loop
device if you have that in your kernel. Check the CD-Writing HOWTO.
But there must be easier ways to get freedos...
