could someone important please add this screenshot to the bug report at
sourceforge (i can't find a submit file option). this shows both problems
(missing red highlighting in options menu and missing status bar at bottom of
screen)

well the bug is easily reproduceable.
It's not that easy to solve. The game uses split-screen hardware scrolling
by using the line compare register (so the upper part scrolls up and
down quickly on real hardware, whereas the lower part stays fixed), and
the VGA emulator simply doesn't know about the line compare register at
all.
