Journaling File Systems...

When I first installed Linux in 1998, I don't remember there being any
other file system to use other than Ext2.  After 2000, I went a few
years without Linux.  This time around, when installing Linux, I noticed
I could use anything from Ext3 to ReiserFS to JFS etc... I steered clear
of these and chose Ext2 because it was all that I knew.  Now, after
reading an article on journaling file-systems in Linux Magazine, I am
convinced I need to use this technology on my next system (which should
arrive Friday).

Here's my question:  what would you guys suggest as a good file system
for a client?  I use my system for programming, multimedia (home movies,
mp3s, pics, etc...).  So far, it seems good to go with Reiser.  JFS and
XFS seem like overkill for a client and Ext3 is not efficient enough.

What are your opinions?

Ext 3 has some slowness, I guess, but I use it without any real
headaches for my workstation and a couple of servers (not particularly
I/O intensive servers, mind you).

Want to have a play with ReiserFS because of the speed. Don't know about
the others. 

From what I've read, ReiserFS might be worth going for, depending on
what you are doing on your workstation.

use reiserfs - I use it since slackware 8.0 appeared and have no complaints

problems with dual boot

Hi All,

My computer (which has Windows 2000/Red Hat Linux 7.0)
Dual Boot with a WinNT loader, has developed problems.
Someone else was using it and now when I select the
Linux option at boot time, it says that some
kernel.exe file is missing and does not boot. Windows
boots fine. I tried using a linux boot floppy  from
another Linux machine (Redhat 6.2) to get into the
linux partition and install LILO (thinking that it
might be a problem with the loader), but could not
find the boot partition mounted. Doing fdisk /dev/hda
gives me the error "Unable to load /dev/hda"

Could someone suggest a way out?

Hozed.

It's my experience that it's better to install Linux last.
Never trust a Windoze app to launch Linux...

One thing you might try.  Begin reinstallation of RedHat except
look for an option that will allow you reinstal LILO or GRUB.

Why would a boot floppy from one machine know where is the /boot
partition on another to mount it, unless you made it on purpose to do
that?  Make a mount point if you don't already have one handy
(mkdir /mountpoint)
and mount it yourself
mount /dev/hda? /mountpoint

if this                         ^^^^ is a typo for open,
maybe you were not root and had not permission?

Why do you need fdisk?  Do you not know where is /boot?

My system went down recently - I *think* because one of the three(!) hard 
drives was failing.    And I definitely needed to read the drives to see what 
partitions I had on each one....

So I intalled a new system on a spare drive, then added each old drive in 
turn and checked it with  fdisk, Antivir (just in case) and fsck.   I had to 
mount it to use Antivir, using the partition names I got from reading fdisk.
All as su to root, of course.

I'd recommend XFS. All the Workstations I manage run it without a hitch. 
Very fast, stable, and xfsdump works. ;) I've also used the features 
such as growfs to get more room (it works while the FS is mounted).

If your using NFS stay away from Reiser. I hear reports all the time 
that "nfs+reiser is now fixed" but everytime I give it another go it 
screws up bad....
