What firewall is recommended on kernels 2.4.X? Any documentation that I read 
about ipchains refers to version 2.2.X. What about iptables?

You will want to use iptables with the 2.4.x kernels.  Iptables is vastly 
greater than the older ipchains and you can find info about iptables here

Howdy, Ladies and Gentlemen newbie guru's"

 I'd would like a wireless (802.11b) link between two hosts:
kernel-2.2.19 (Slackware-7.1) k6-266 
kernel-2.4.17 (Slackware-8.0) 80586x120

 I am installing D-Link DWL-520 PCI cards.

How do I configure the cards, /usr/src/linux/.config ?

How do I set them up for an 'ad-hoc' network?

How do I configure the cards to use one channel among 1 through 6?

I presume you have seen in wlan.conf that it is possable to do what you 
want,?.

As another matter of interest this driver is what i need as well, it supports 
my actiontec hardware. I have a pcmica card and an usb adaptor, both seem to 
be supported. I will experiment with it later on this week.

It would seem that you asked a question and by doing so have solved a problem 
i have been pondering on for some time, as a matter of fact the devices i 
have all work well under windows XP, i did need to flach the pcmica card and 
update the XP drivers tho' after that all was fine.

Perhaps some bad news (for me) came from the list.linux.wlan.org.
The D-Link DWL-520 may require a PCI 2.2 compatible motherboard.
:-(

 I see that the Linksys WMP11 is PCI 2.1 compliant, but that may
mean it requires a PCI 2.1 motherboard.  I doubt that the ole
cyrix workstation I am trying to use is either!  The workstation
is a cyrix 80586x120 in a 3C49 motherboard.

Well at the minute from what i have read i could belive "almost" anything, 
however the device "seems" to me to be older than a motherbaord of that type, 
so i would not stitch too much truth on that statement but who knows ;-)

On another note how does one subscribe to list.linux.wlan.org as i am having 
a lot of fun(troubles) here with my USB device.

 I would like to upgrade from kernel-2.2.20 to 2.4.18,
but I don't know how to make 2.4.x use ipchains instead
of iptables.  I'm using Roaring Penguin v3.3 (PPPOE) and
it is set up to use ipchains.  I cannot figure how to
answer "/usr/src/linux#make config"
to let 2.4.x use ipchains.

 My new 802.11b wireless card needs 2.4.x.
 My aDSL (pppoe) wants IPCHAINS (2.2.x).
 I want both!

How do I do it?

Easy, choose the correct option while configuringing you new kernel;
Under;
IP: Netfilter Configuration choose;
CONFIG_IP_NF_COMPAT_IPCHAINS=m
You may wish to choose other possablity's as well, its up to you.

Upon starting your new kernel you will need to insmod or modprobe ipchains.o
I belive you use slackware on one of your machines, add a line in 
/etc/rc.d/rc.modules for ipchains, providing of course you use 
/etc/rc.d/rc.modules.
If not you will need to modprobe ipchains before you bring up your interfaces.

I've gotten it working with a K6/266 MB and
a K6-2/500 MB:

 I edited wlan.conf (adhoc=y) and moved it to
/etc/wlan.conf
 and moved rc.wlan to
/etc/rc.d/rc.wlan
 The 'make install' didn't place them for me, as advertised. :-|

 Ran
#modprobe prism2_pci
#ifconfig wlan0 up
#/etc/rc.d/rc.wlan start
#ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.1
/* I'm not to sure of the order :-| */

 I pinged this host from a Win2kpro host:
c:\> ping -n 99 -l 32760 192.168.1.1
 and it indicated an 11 Megabit link with
 ~65k bytes/second.

 I'm wanting to create a community wireless LAN using a water tower
as a passive reflector and hoping for ~5 mile radius of the water
tower.  I am also wanting to use the minimum CPU horsepower for the
wireless<>internet gateway. This is why I'm trying to get a wireless
device working in my old 80586x120. ;-)
