I'm looking for what I would think of as a "frontend" or gui for ppp for this Slackwarish Linux install I've got. I have some confusions about just what ppp is: yes, I know it stands for "point to point protocol", and it stands to reason that it is therefore a protocol that computers use to communicate over phone (and perhaps other) lines. I would think a "protocol" in computing would be something like "etiquette" in other spheres of human activity: in order for social interections to occur smoothly, but also to facilitate in communication, people follow certain rules called "etiquette." For example, not everyone should be trying to talk at the same time. Or, one should not fall asleep or suddenly run out of the room when someone is trying to communicate with them. So, on this understanding, ppp would be like etiquette, while the actual vehicle for communication would be language (and TCP/IP might be analogous to language in the realm of computer intercommuncations?)  arifying comments on that analogy would be appreciated, I think my confusion over ppp might be owing to the fact that a process that seems to run on the computer is also called "ppp." I think of this as some sort of software, or perhaps an element of the operating system that allows the computer to "kick in" ppp communications: it runs when a ppp connection is needed, and stops when it is no longer needed. Apart from making these discreet connections, ppp is not needed or used by the computer. Such is my vague understanding of the matter: please feel free to correct my errors. And if I am unduly confused by naming what I think of as a program with the same name as the protocol the program is written to utilize and implement - both being called "ppp" - please offer a better understanding. All that to say that I need some sort of cute, clicky pictures to operate this ppp stuff. I currently just open a console, su, and type in "ppp-on" when I want to start the connection, and 
 "ppp-off" when I want to stop it. That's fine for me, but others who may use the computer might be confused by it or think it unnecessarily arcane. It's for them that I need the pretty, clicky pictures. I should mention in closing that I have neither KDE nor Gnome installed on this computer. Kppp I've used before and it is right along the lines of what I need. But I don't think one can get Kppp without installing the whole KDE shebang, can one? Thus, suggestions for other frontends/gui's will be appreciated.

I use icewm and have put ppp-on and ppp-off into the icewm menu.
Click on the penguin, click on the ppp-on bar, and the modem
dials.  Is that the sort of thing you want?

Create a shortcut to the ppp-on & off scripts on the desktop and assign any
picture/icon to them (?). I have my own Script that auto-starts at boot/init
time then it stays up until I shut down Linux (which automatically takes down
PPP), though I only use Linux for Batched/Auto Client applications, and could
post that if you like. :)
