* server hangs after sometime on starting apache

Hi,

When i restart apache, the memory usage shoots up to 1041M  after some 
time. After that, the server hangs up. Any solutions?
I'm using apache 1.3.33 .
This is the top result:-

files, maybe some script is trying to use this much of memory and so
on. And of course it is much better to ask on apache mailing list than
on linux-newbie...
