The two standard ones are xawtv and xine. There are probably others too.
All this stuff is a bit more hit-and-miss than one would like; there is
quite a bit of variation in codecs (.avi is a file format standard, but not
a codec standard), and you'll need to see if the specific encodings you have
work with them.
If not, there are apps that will convert formats; one is Mplayer ... but I
haven't sued this stuff so can't help you more there, or even tell you how
well Mplayer works.
